Depending on what flux used when making the glass, it can change color when placed in the sun. Good "crystal" that is glass that has been made with a high lead content won't change color....but cheaper glass which has been made using another element for a flux ( most commonly manganese) will turn purple in the sunlight. Not likely to turn brownish nor greenish in 80 years of being on the ceiling and not outside in the hot sun. Mike, it's most likely your old glass has a different composition than the newer prisms....of if you buy new from a different source, they might be slightly different still. Ever been to parts of New England and seen the purple windows in some 200 year old houses. Vicky, most likely your prosims are lead crystal and clear as....well....glass, when you get them clean. Taking that all apart and soaking is a huge job! Next time try Chandeliere Cleaner.....does a good enough job and it's very easy. I have a fixture very like yours in my bedroom....but smaller. 1. Assess your venting if you're getting greasy dirt. Maybe you need a higher CFM blower. As others have mentioned, turn on your vent before starting to cook to establish a draft pattern. 2. A high quality 2" angled paint brush is great for dusting--"dust". It gets into the grooves really well. However, if there is grease holding the dust there, it won't work well and you'll need to do #1 and possibly #3. 3. "Damp" dust or clean with a microfiber cloth and a gentle cleaner. NO oil soap or 409 or anything with ammonia. Those can damage the finish over time. Just a microfiber cloth dampened with a small bit of dish detergent if you need to "wash" the cabinets and water only if you're just trying to pick up clingy dust. Be sure to rinse the detergent if you wash them.

I know this thread is old but I read it all with interest. Our home was finished at the end of 1999(we purchased it in 2004). All the cabinetry(kitchen, breakfast nook, family room, four full bathrooms) is white Crystal MDF the drawers are maple. We were told that it was very high end cabinetry. At the time of purchase, we noticed cracking along the edges of the raised panels, as well as chips at the corners of the toe kicks. The damage was worse near areas that had contact with water especially around the kitchen sink. The Crystal rep came out and reordered replacement doors. Our laundry room has no problems and has HD quality cabinets! Fast forward many years....we continued to have issues. All replaced doors(replaced many times) continue to have the same issues. They come from the factory with less than perfect paint coverage. I have decided that the edges are too sharp and do not get covered with adequate paint. Once they crack, the moisture gets in and the MDF material swells. I have always liked the function of the interior of my cabinets but the MDF coated panels and trim is horrible. It will be time soon for a new kitchen and I would never get white painted cabinets from Crystal!

I just figured this out a few years ago. It may have been something everyone else learned when they were children but I am going to share it because it has helped me. When I am trying to clean something particularly grimy, I try to clean as much as I can with a dry method - cloth, vacuum, brush, whatever. Then I use the wet cleaner. I used to spray the heck out of everything and then get frustrated by the dirt and cleaning solution mud. With your chandelier, I'd feather-dust it or run a soft brush vacuum attachment over it before I sprayed. Good luck, hope the spray works well!
