Need Stainless Farmhouse Kitchen Sink Advice

Considering a 32-33 inch flat front stainless farmhouse kitchen sink and need advice on sink "construction". The installation will be an undermount. I like the sinks with the "full sides" rather than those with only the apron in front (sink1).

The question is what are the advantages/disadvantages of the sinks with the bottom flush (sink2) to the sides or those with the bottom ~1" lower than the sides (sink3)

Seems that the bottom and sides flush would be sturdier overall and have better/easier support as is the case with a previous fireclay farmhouse sink I installed? (can slide in on 2x4 supports on edges.)

The first sink is self-facing, so the quality of the cut on the cabinet front is covered. This is much easier to install than a sink with sides that has to be scribed carefully to a cabinet and no matter how welll done, will probably need to be caulked.

2x4s cannot push a sink upward toward the stone bottom as can a strap system like the Hercules Universal Sink Harness, or a pair of Sink Straps, or a Pete's Sink Mount Kit.

It's all about apron size and sink depth. You can get a sink with and 8" high apron and a 10" deep bowl - there will be no sides and the bottom won't be connected. Your second sink is shallower than the third one because of that. The apron height is also important depending on the cabinet you are getting. Not all cabinets can handle an 10 or 11" high apron . One is not any sturdier than the other.

Please follow the advice above about the straps... he is the sink guru!

I’ve had a 30” Shaw at a second home for 10 years and still love it but decided on the 33” Kohler Whitehaven for our new kitchen reno at home - it was such a price difference and looked so similar. I actually like it better! I especially like the slight slant of the bottom to the offset drain. Much easier to rinse scraps into the disposal. It’s still new but it does seems like the Kohler finish is easier to keep clean. We removed the Kohler logo (which was crooked anyway) so it’s just all white and looks great!

Thanks, CircusPeanut, for posting the photo. That sink is made like mine, with the rim around the sides and front, so it gives me a good idea of how mine will look up-mounted (not sure that is the technical term) from the counter tops. I've just got one window to work with, so I'm hoping the build out won't be so obvious with a deep window sill over it. I do wish I had thought more about the build-out factor before talking DH into this modification :) I saw Arlosmom's buildout and think mine will end up looking a lot like hers. Thanks for those extra pics you sent me :) Anybody else willing to show pics of buildouts for the sink or comments about the process? Terry

white vinyl or stainless steel sink grid for shaw farmhouse sink?

My Shaws sink is 10 years old. I had the white grid for about 8 years. Some of the white material starting coming off and it starting rusting in those spots. It did show discoloration. I used bleach about once a month (very dilute) in the sink and that cleaned it up pretty well. I just recently felt it was time to replace the grid and got a new SS one from Amazon. I thought the SS would solve all of the problems. It still gets "gunky" at the intersections. A blackish gunk. So it has to be cleaned frequently as well. The alternative is no grid which is not a good alternative. I didn't have a grid for the first couple years and the bottom of the sink got a few chips. White looks better imho. As far as wear and care...its six of one and half dozen of another.

After getting the sink installed I'm regretting not purchasing a self-trimming apron front sink instead. When the contractors cut the cabinet, it left a small gap around the sink edges (and a few chips too). The contractor says they'll cover it with scribe molding so you won't see it, and hopefully that will resolve the issue.
