Need Help With Den Layout
Comments (3)My living room is about 12x16, solid walls on 2 sides, picture window on one long wall. It's really not a huge space. We have a couch and love seat perpendicular to each other on the solid walls, and a recliner in the opposite corner. There is a small bookcase in one corner, but if I set up a card table, the room is very crowded. Do you have furniture to put here, or will you be buying new, since it's a new space? I find the only way I can "see" furniture placement is to draw out the space on graph paper, and make paper cutouts of the furniture, so I can move it around as I please. If you're starting from scratch, I guess you'd need to more firmly nail down your needs, more specifically than in your first post. Will this be space be play room, project room? It doesn't sound like TV is a priority. How much seating do you need? How about a table to do crafts or board games? How much storage space do you need? Open shelving or enclosed? I would use the whole wall that the desk is on for storage and shelving, and maybe lower the window on the bottom wall - again, it depends on how much you want/need, and what you'll be doing in the room. It also depends on what direction the window faces. It's a lot of space for an office, but I got the impression it would be more than that. Comments (3)I looked at your photos and wondered if you are in the Southwest, and immediately thought of xeriscaping, which is creating a space that uses very little water and suits its environment and is easy to care for. In such a garden there are one or more paths and sitting areas using bricks or flagstones or cobblestones or even very fine pebbles. The rest of the area is covered with mulch (there are some attractive mulches available now, finally) in which are planted the trees, bushes, and flowers. Watering is infrequent and there is no lawn to mow. I think that it's a beautiful look that would enhance your space and inspire your creativity. We changed our dismal front yard to xeriscaping and I am so happy with it that it's a major reason why I don't ever want to move. Here are some details about creating this kind of yard, but it can be considerably easier than the article suggests, especially since yours is so small. You could paint whichever walls you like and also the door; it would contribute a modern flair and additional interest. The great thing about paint is that it's pretty easy to change the color if you tire of it. I love the idea of growing one's own mint for mojitos!...See MoreNeed ideas for making this living room warm and cozy!
Comments (25)I think that you need more lamps in the room. Does anyone read or knit in this room? If so, a lamp and table between the chairs would be a handy place for a book and a drink. You definitely need something to anchor the couch, either a coffee table or perhaps the ottoman that you showed. I'm a book person, so I'd love to see bookcases behind the chairs, but that might not suit your life style....See MoreJessie B
