Comments (35)Very interesting tradition of the Amish wedding dress. My great-grandmother was a Seminole and they had different tradition. If you look at the woman on the left in the photo I've linked you'll see that she wears a large collection of bead necklaces. Upon birth a Seminole female would receive a bead necklace, and over the years she'd add more necklaces. At middle age she would start removing them one by one until at her death she would be left with the original necklace she received at her birth. Seminoles also had their own version of the birthing room. If a death occurred in the confines of their village the would abandon the village and find a new spot to set up camp. Infant mortality was quite high in those times and in order to keep from moving constantly they would set up a small shelter just outside the boundaries of the village as a birthing shelter. Comments (14)There might be a good possibility of TX and OK having about an equal number of tornadoes. Haven't seen any figures on it, but I suspect someone has that info. The "straight winds" is a term for "we don't really want to call it a tornado", kinda like they don't call "dust devils" tornadoes, in California. In actuality, most storm damage comes from twisting and churning winds, not "straight line", as the term implies. Hurricanes are the exception, in that they do tend to be more like "straight line" winds, in one direction (at a time), although they actually have a circular motion. In reality, lots of strange effects occur in storm winds, such as the "wind shear" that pilots talk about, where there is a sudden, and strong, down draft, that in some cases, has been enough to literally flatten buildings. I have seen tornadoes in a great many places, myself, including Miami area, both on land and on the ocean. They can occur anytime/anywhere you get thunderstorms. The super cells are the worst, as they tend to spawn many twisters, and not just one or two. "Tornado Alley" actually covers the whole middle of the country, right up to the great lakes. My experience in mountain vs. plains areas, suggests that mountains tend to lessen the impact of severe weather, for whatever reason, while the plains tend to allow severe weather more frequently. I figure air currents are partly associated with that . Having seen the difference in various kinds of storms, tornadoes are, in my opinion, much more dangerous, as there is little or no warning. These days, you can see a hurricane coming for days in advance. Next most dangerous are tsunami's and storm surges associated with hurricanes, as the destructive force of water, is astounding, when coming in off the sea, or any very large lake. Probably the most impacting of all kinds of disasters, of course, are earthquakes and volcanoes, with volcanoes being the worst of the two. The most worrisome, happens to be island volcanoes, where it is possible that enough of a volcano could slip into the sea, to cause a tsunami of epic proportions, on top of the volcanic eruption itself. Comments (73)red_lover - again putting on my photographer's hat in regard to flowers (if you prefer that I don't chime in, please let me know, I don't mean to be overbearing). You may want to consider real flowers for DD bouquet. I know that I typically get close ups of the bouquet and silk ones (no matter how high the quality) never look quite the same as real ones do in close ups - they don't reflect the light the same way and there's always a few random "strings" as well that are give aways. Far away (i.e. normal viewing distance, many people won't know the difference, but in close ups of the flowers, it's something that you see. The drawback (aside from cost) with real is that they do wilt/die. Avoid "delicate" flowers or make certain that the photographer gets the details of DD flowers at the start of the day (actually, I do this as a matter of course - they are at their peak then). Another option that DD may want to look into is something that is less traditional, but looks beautiful and can tie into the antique theme well - the brooch bouquet. (I've attached a photo from one that I photographed before) Not necessarily cheaper by any stretch, but it can become a gorgeous keepsake. There's the possibility to even "deconstruct" it later and use the various pins with outfits, or possibly even hand down special pins to (possible) children that she and her future DH have together. Comments (40)This is such a fun thread to read! My nighties mostly have pink roses all over them. They definitely look like nighties. I've been in the backyard once or twice, like to turn off the sprinklers before it rains, wearing a heavy flannel one. In general, however, if I have to go outside, I put a big coat on. Like wearing a robe, but outerwear. :) Most of the time, around the house, I wear short dresses. No big foofy skirt to brush papers off low tables. :) T-dresses in the Summer and sweater dresses in the Winter, and long sleeve in between in the transitional weather. They're not necessarily the most flattering garments on me, but they're the type of things that are meant to be worn on the street, and have proper underclothes under them. I have no hesitation walking out front dressed like that, though I'm careful of bending over. :) I will run an errand if I'm wearing the more respectable ones, or pop a skirt over the shorter T's. I don't see people over the age of 4 going to the store, or any place "out", in their nightclothes, though I have no idea of there are PJ's under people's outer layers. :) I get it about living in the country and watering the fowl or whatever, or getting the paper in a robe. People here wear workout wear or regular clothes to walk their dogs. I'm not sure if that's a place to place thing, or a city vs. country thing....See Moredeegw
