Exterior trim colors for red brick house

We are having a terrible time picking paint colors for the exterior of our house. We want to keep the brick natural and we just got a new roof and dark bronze gutters. We are leaning towards painting the eaves and top trim dark like the gutters, but I think that would mean that we need to also paint some other parts of the house that same dark color.

We have shutters, a recessed front door, siding on the back of the house, a garage door, etc. that all need color choices made for them and I am losing my mind. The windows we have are pretty new and they are white so we are not changing those to dark like I have seen on some brick houses.

ANY and ALL ideas you have about colors for all the bits and pieces of our house would be GREATLY appreciated. We are open to using a few different colors to accent different parts of the house.

Pictures 1 & 2 are our house as it is currently (yellowish cream and green).

Picture 3 is an inspiration house that has white windows but has gone dark on all their trim.

Is your roof as blue as it looks in the pic ? Not a fan of #3 - better would be windows/doors dark, trim/porch midtone or light (but not stark white). Dark colors recede, lighter colors come forward. I know its partly the lighting, but the entire front of that house is a black hole, not very welcoming.

ETA - just read that your windows are new and white. Its too bad that stock window colors have to drive a color scheme on a house, but it is what it is. So you have three colors - brick red, white windows , gray (blue gray?) roof. I always like to keep things simple - get rid of the yellow (ie cream) and stick to 3 colors. Shutters /garage and other doors could become a grayer/ darker version of roof color, and switch the cream to a white that is not as bright as the window white, but still relates well to it. Maybe the siding on the back could be same or slightly lighter gray as shutters/doors. The back would have a different feel from the front, but thats OK.

If anyone can help I would be grateful! I really need to make a decision this weekend if possible. I know I need to do samples but would appreciate any direction on which SW whites to look at. I want it to be soft and warm/inviting and wouldn't even mind a cream if I can find on that still looks like a creamy white rather than yellow. Thoughts? Would SW Creamy work or go too yellow?

Google "shutter colors for red brick house" and you'll see a lot of nice suggestions. I like the ones that show pale grey-blues or pale bluish-greens. I do think that red brick actually leans toward terra cotta, and red doors kind of clash with the brick. I could see the pale blues on both your shutters and door. I think I'd remove the shutters on the main window because being so close to the door, there actually might be too much color.

Adding to my original post - The first pics I included are of the House as it is now. It shows the reddish brownish creamish brick & shows how it looks in different light. The last pic is of the Estate Gray color roof we are having done. I will now post a pic of the cedar color we like for the stain on the replaced posts on the front porch, as well as the Sherwin Williams Mt. Etna color we were thinking of - but it might be too dark...

I’m not a fan of dark trim with bright white windows. Many of the examples above have windows that match the trim color, so it all looks cohesive.

(I reserve the right to change my mind if someone finds an awesome example.) :D

The photo you posted for inspiration is too contrasting, and the windows become a busy focal point. The trim matches the brick tones — yours wouldn’t — so you’d have a lot going on.

I’d do a simple timeless scheme — deeper blue or another color with white trim and siding. I know dark trim colors are trendy now (and I do like many I see), but sometimes sticking with the classics is good, too, esoecially with the style of your house.

I would love to see your home with white trim everywhere (including your siding), and properly scaled shutters painted black. Door, too. You have nice narrow double hung windows and I think you have enough room to accommodate wider shutters that will appear to close over your windows. Lovely home!

I also love the first color palette of the blue, light gray and black Beverly suggested. Can you help me figure out which colors would go where? Here is what I am thinking…

1 - Top trim around eaves and soffits. – BLUE

2 - Larger trim above windows on front of house. – light GRAY

3 - Finer trim around windows (same on front and back?) (the actual windows themselves will remain white) - light GRAY

4 - Shutters - BLUE

5 - Front door - BLACK

6 - Side lights on either side of front door - BLACK

7- Other trim around front door (all the same or a combination of colors?) - light GRAY for flat front part – BLUE for recessed area

8 - Siding on back of house - light GRAY

9 - Patio doors on back of house - light GRAY

10 - Garage door - BLUE

11 - Trim around garage door - light GRAY

Please let me know what you think about my ideas.
