deciphering tongue and groove vs plank ceiling

does anyone think these photos would be a plank wood ceiling instead of tongue and groove?

does tongue and groove usually have a slight gap between the boards?

Any idea what material of wood is used? I like how the wood doesn't look grainy or knotty.

Any idea on how wide the pieces are and how far apart the beams might be?

Definitely T&G. T&G would still have slight gaps from expansion and contraction of the wood was green when installed. 1 & 2 are T&G Center Match & #3 is T&G Vee Joint. #1 appears to possible by Cypress, #3 is definitely Cedar, #2 looks to have a stain put on it so it is tough to tell but might be Doug or Hem Fir. They are all Clear Grade.

Hard to tell. The spacing is different in all 3. Anywhere from 4' to 8' maybe. I'd guess they're all tongue and groove. You can see a bevel on the edge of one of them. One picture shows the boards going through the "beams" so I'd guess the beams are tacked on. No idea the wood type from these pics

I saw an HGTV show today where the beach house homeowner had made a wood ceiling out of ripped 6"-8" wide lengths off of thin plywood sheets. It was to mimic shiplap. Easy to hang. Looked great after painting!

From the sounds of it they will be cosmetically the same. The tongue and groove will help keep the boards on the same plane as the wood moves (all wood does) which I would think of as a positive feature. Additionally the tongues will be nailed/stapled into the subfloor, providing more mechanical fasteners (less chance for bounce/squeeks) then something thats only top nailed. My advice would be to go for the tongue and groove.

It should be possible to determine the age of the t&g - I cant tell from the photos what's what. If its original to house then you should keep it and create your own version of "coastal" instead of replicating exactly what you see out of a magazine (which is not to say you cuoldnt or shouldnt borrow colors/ inspiration from it). Why? Because early 1900s wood was still coming from the old growth forests that once covered most of eastern north America. It is an entirely different thing than the soft splintery farmed wood of today - crappy because of the growth accelerants its given. The old growth wood, even pine and fir isvery fine grained and hard as nails. and worth $$$ as salvage so I hope if you removed any of that that it didnt end up in landfill or firewood. If it is/was just some of that knotty pine panelling from the 50s-60s- still better quality than today, but imho removing it wouldnt be a major no-no as is removing/destroying the old growth stuff.

The first step should be to determine and use the same materials...second would be to be clear what it is you like about the colors...at this point any experienced and qualified painter should be able mix or choose the right formula...it is possible to experiment on remnants once the ceiling is done...
