Comments (3)Hi Iso!!!! I just wanted to pop in and say that i would leave them in the 1 gallon pots. Since they were just rooted and the trees haven't grown that much, the root system probably doesn't need to be repotted or even potted up. So i would not disturb the roots at this time. Let them thrive in the same container and enjoy this season to grow and be happy trees. I have several trees in one gallon containers and also some in 3 and 5 gallon containers. The large trees will be root pruned and placed back in the same container. I will not go larger than a 5 gallon container due to having to bring them in every season. Hope you are doing well... We are having some warm temps here on the East Coast and i did bring out some... : ) trees. (50 or so) to enjoy the sunshine and the warm temps. It is just amazing to see how happy they are to get some sunshine right now...im sure that i will bring them in again next week, but for now ... I will probably be doing this for the next month or so..Last year i think i carried them in and out at least 5 times..The things we do for our trees!!! LOL.. But, i love it!!! Hope this helps.. They will be happy left alone in those containers and will continue to grow and become beautiful trees for you!!! Take care Iso!!! Laura...See Morewhats bigger-1 gallon or band pot?
Comments (7)no fancy.. foo foo conifer.. is grown from seed ... only species [there is probably a better word] come from seed ... e.g. Pinus strobus ... the plain old telephone pole trees ... if you see a name like P strobus 'gold painted' ... it is 99.999% a graft ... someone found one tree with cool gold markings .... so he spent 2 to 4 years ... growing a root stock ... and then grafted on pieces of his really cool plant ... and then spent one to 10 more years.. growing it on to sale size ... a fresh graft was grafted this winter... do not buy them ... even though they are rather cheap .. you are just not up with that learning curve ... BUT.. some sellers.. will immediately price them for future sale ... one tag.. one tag forever ... but i doubt CK does that ... hence why i said contact them and ask ... conifers are trees .. and trees are not really pot things .. but these dudes need to keep them in pots for many years ... so they need to be up potting them every year ... if you look at a site like CK.. you will see they offer.. 1... 3... 5 .. 15 etc.. gallon pots.. and the price rockets with each ... our friend dax has some great videos on grafting.. maybe he can link you to one ... fyi ... and.... just to complicate all that ... in the wayback machine.. someone though Silberlocke came true from seed ... though they might look alike.. they ended up not being true to type .... thats a thumbnail on it all... ken...See MoreAbout how many plugs from a 1 gallon pot of grass?
Comments (3)Don't ignore weighing how long the root disruption will set back new growth. If you choose to separate into very small pieces, it may take longer to fill in an area as the plugs put more effort into reestablishing a root system first. You may want to plant the gal. intact and remove new side growth for use as plugs, even though the size differences will be apparent, because the original plant will quickly produce more due to having a good root system. Or choose to split the difference by only splitting the original plants in half....See Moremad_gallica (z5 Eastern NY)
