Dishwasher making a humming noise

I have a Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher. A few months ago the drain pump went out and I replaced it; I knew it was out when there was standing water in the tank :-/

Recently I noticed that when I turn it on it's MUCH louder, making a type of humming noise that revs up and down occasionally. So something's not right.

Everything is coming out clean, so I don't think it's the circulation pump. And there's no standing water, so I don't think it's the drain pump.

Any other suggestions?

I love my Frigidaire Gallery counter depth refrigerator that I bought during the Pandemic in December 2020 (was a floor model) and I love my GE Cafe Stove. My KitchenAid dishwasher finally died after 13.5 years (hadn't been drying or cleaning well for the last so many years but now is not working and needs to be replaced). Everyone says to get a Bosch. My dishwasher is so close to the refrigerator. Any recommendations since there are so many bad reviews on every major appliance and Frigidaire dishwashers have bad reviews by Consumer Reports.

Thanks, everyone! @homepro01 - the dishwasher is a KitchenAid Model #KUDI01TJWH0. Nothing (that I know of) has changed with respect to our plumbing. @antss and weedmeister - I spent some time the other evening and take apart as much as I could :-). I took the bottom sprayers, the filter looking gadget :-), and got as far as the what I'm seeing is called the "chopper assembly" (pic here http://www.partselect.com/PartDetail.aspx?Inventory=392939&SourceCode=1). I didn't find anything hard like glass or metal. Everything was mushy and soft. Should I go further? Also - not sure if this was a bad idea, but with all the parts all the way to the chopper assembly taken out, I started a rinse cycle, let the water fill for a few seconds, then canceled the cycle to drain the water. The noise was still there. So I'm thinking whatever is causing it is further down in the system. Should I keep going all the way to the pump itself? And is the pump accessible from the top? Or from underneath the unit?

Do you hear this same humming noise after the full wash cycle is complete but before you press the "off" button? If so, you're hearing the built-in transformer, which was included in these machines so this inherently 240-volt washer could be run off the 120 volt outlets that are common in North America. This normally does make a humming sound, although it shouldn't be loud.

Sounds as if the fan runs 24/7. Definitely different from my usage pattern-- to each his own. And running in the living room while you are sleeping in the bedroom? My hearing is quite poor and if I heard the fan, I might rejoice for a while. After all, many things are a matter of perspective. To a worm, digging in the dirt is more relaxing than is going fishing. But guesses are all I have. Perhaps the bearings are just worn out. Perhaps the accumulation of dust on the top of the blades is uneven and has upset the balance of the assembly. Perhaps the screws holding the fan to the ceiling box have worked loose and need tightening.

How close is the bathroom to a furnace or HVAC system? Almost every one of theses uses a 120 VAC to 24 VAC transformer to derive the thermostat controls. The sound can be easily transferred by metal duct work. What Is on the two circuits? A mechanics stethoscope and some time should allow you to track down the source. Every AC power line has a magnetic field around it (Typical power wiring is NOT twisted for field cancellation, and twisting conductors only works in 'far field' conditions anyway). Any magnetic object in that field can vibrate form the field. A single drywall screw that is no longer tight in the wood can transfer vibration to the drywall. A screw in a junction box that is not tight.

I bought all Frigidaire Gallery appliances around 14 years ago.

The refrigerator compressor went out first, and I replaced it with an LG. I don't think it made it to 10 years.

Then the laundry washer went out, and I replaced it and the dryer with a stackable Samsung. I don't think they made it to 10 years, either.

The dishwasher drain pump went out last year, which turned out to be an extremely easy thing to replace and cost about $20.

This time, it turned out to be the main circulation pump. It was also extremely easy to replace, and now it's so quiet I have to keep looking to see if I forgot to turn it on! LOL But this pump cost just under $200:

Now one of the burners in my glass top stove isn't working well (nowhere near as hot as the others on the same setting), so I guess it has an expiration date, too.

I read that life expectancy for a refrigerator is 10-20 years, so these are all going bad at the lower end of that range. So they look good and work well, but I have to give low marks for longevity.

Since you like the refrigerator, though, were I in your shoes I would get a matching Frigidaire Gallery dishwasher. The fact that it's so easy to work on makes it attractive, and even if a motor goes bad in 10 years then it will be very easy to replace and get yourself another 10 years :-)
