How to cover a daybed so it looks more like a couch than a bed

I recently got this daybed (https://www.wayfair.ca/furniture/pdp/novogratz-her-majesty-twin-daybed-with-trundle-mcce1230.html?piid%5B0%5D=35227330) that I intend to use primarily as a sofa and occasionally for guest sleeping. I got a twin size mattress to use with it but there's a little space in the top frame and I don't want to hide the headrest by throwing large pillows on there (it looks really pretty). Is there a different mattress to use or any other fix that could be done here? I also want to cover the daybed to look more like a couch than a bed, is there such a thing as tufted sheets or at sheets that would look like a sofa. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I got a similar daybed in the beginning of the pandemic when online was my only option. It’s for a playroom (and guest sleeping when necessary). I had to get an extremely thin mattress for the top and $100 worth of pillows to make it look (a little) like a couch. However, it’s terribly uncomfortable as a couch. Actually pretty comfortable as a bed (of course, that’s due to the mattress). I appreciate my couch a lot more after this daybed.

Terriks, that is such a great diagram! Tia, several years ago, I made a similar cover for the daybed in my guest room. It doesn't have the elastic around the bottom as you're thinking, but does fit snugly. I ended up using a king-size comforter in order to get all the fabric I needed, but actually didn't need such a big one. The comforter gave me the patterned, quilted fabric I wanted, but it is bulky and a bit hard to put on. Once it's on, though, it stays in place nicely. I have noticed that my guests do have trouble getting it back on and often leave the bed half made during their stay. It's also not practical as it is, to use as an extra blanket while sleeping. Soooo, now when guests come to stay, I use a thin, lightweight quilt instead and use the fitted cover I made when the room's used just for a den and DD sits on the bed like a sofa. BTW, the bedskirt is not actually gold as it looks in the pic, but a sueded fabric in a chamois color. Just some food for thought before you start cutting ;^D Lynn

The best part of this project completion has been DH's reaction. The basement furnishings are more transitional / modern feeling and more masculine. He came into the area and sat down on a sofa, looked around and said, "This is REALLY nice." He looked carefully at everything, sat in all the chairs and sofas and claimed a sofa for his own. From a man of few words, this was high praise! After the final botanical charts and pieces of majolica are up I am finished with this space in terms of accessories, we are going to take the light off the fan (wasn't supposed to be there) and finish up the bathroom, but essentially the living spaces are complete. That is a great feeling, to know there's nothing more to shop for, especially since my initial thought was that the charts would be placeholders for "real" art (paintings). I am so glad we made the decision to do the whole space with those prints and I don't need to to change any of it in the future unless I just want to.

I prefer futons. I have a very nice futon with a memory foam mattress that lays flat and people comment all the time how comfortable it is to sit on and sleep on. I tried out daybeds and looked at pull out sofas but the futon was the most comfortable. I have a flex room or the game room as we call it where the futon is housed we use it when I have more guests than guest bedrooms. I have found people downstairs in the flex room who were watching tv sound asleep. When I ask them what they are doing they say that darn futon is so comfortable it gets you every time. I can't find the exact one I have but this one is very similar. Without pictures, it's impossible to answer. My initial question is why you would want to convert to a daybed. I have a queen bed that I use as a bed and like previous posters, I can't see it functioning well as a couch or chaise which is essentially what a day bed is supposed to do - i.e. be seating during the day and then be used as a bed when needed for sleeping. In my experience, day beds are generally twin size - if a larger sleeping surface is needed, there is the kind of bed which slides out somehow.

Looks very much like a sofa and very little like a day bed to me.

You can have a custom cover made for the mattress. You would remove it when using for a bed. If you have it made a little larger, you can fill the gap with foam cushion that fits within the cover.

The tufting and style are pretty but there are two giveaways that it isn’t a sofa - the sizable gap you mentioned between the top of the mattress and the back, and the depth between the front of the mattress and the back which, without pillows, will only allow you to perch on the edge.

You could get a taller mattress or place a mattress topper on the one you have to close the height difference, then add a cover and a couple of large pillows on each end to help people sit upright. I wonder if it would be more economical and practical to exchange it for a tufted futon that folds down to make a bed when not being used as a sofa.
