October 2021 Week 4
Comments (50)Ok, now I am the one that lost what they had been typing. This had NEVER happened to me..but the browser suddenly refreshed to a blank page. Oh my...well I need to eat my own medicine and start typing in a word processor and then copy/pasting again. Weather...weather is cold, wet, and very windy. I am loving being retired with nothing to do but huddle in my soft warm fleecy bathrobe...it’s a good day for it. I’ll have to get out and walk Jasper about 4 though. While I was typing the first time, I had to stop and think..did I walk him this morning with everything going on? And the answer was yes. I’ll wear (which for me is a ‘gasp’) long pants, and a light coat with a hood. It’s like it’s winter or something! I think we can’t visit the dog park this weekend, it’ll be a muddy mess. So it’s probably a greenway paved trail walk time. Today started with house-cleaning (and I hate cleaning) and taking out trash. Then the AT&T installation of fiber-optic internet (and darn if I can’t tell that it’s any faster, despite being 4x faster down and 30x faster up). Then trying to interface with Moni, every time one is busy or the other is busy when one tried to call. We finally got it done and settled. I had to move furniture around too for the install (getting all the wires, cables, stands, chairs) out of the way. Then of course I had to move them back to protect wires and cables from dogs (hopefully). And darn, if despite the down speed being 4x and the up speed being 30x faster (according to a speed test), I can’t tell any difference yet. I need to download some big things and see if I can see faster. First freeze/hard frost (32) is forecast for Thursday for us. I do want (tomorrow..when sunny and warmer) to get out and forage in the yard, the rain and cooler temps have caused some spring greens to come up. I can collect some plantains, dandelions, violets, and dock and have some wilted greens to supplement the lack of green vegetables I don’t usually eat. It sounds like things are coming together for several of you. Nancy, there’s one good thing, you can keep track of hubby easily for a while..he won’t be going anywhere....See MoreJanuary 2022, Week 3 ALREADY... where does the time go?
Comments (49)Larry, I love your heart for animals. I would be the same way. When the neighbors' animals come up to our fence (or our backdoor) even if I'm running late to work, I'll stop to give them treats and/or feed them. And I also LOVE that Madge started music lessons at 80. She is quite the woman. Very inspiring. Amy, I'm glad you're home and hope you're feeling better too. I don't like a lot of clutter, so don't save everything BUT there's certain things that I do tend to hoard--weird things. It does feel good to clean out doesn't it, Kim? Feels fresh and ready for something new. Again, congrats on your job. (I know we talked on messenger, but I feel like saying it here too!) I'm glad you'll get a day of cuddles with your grandkids on your day off. Nancy, I don't even know what a Rocketbook is. haha. Jen, can't wait to see this tractor. I'm still absolutely excited for you...for your property and tractor and new adventures. Megan, love it when you check in here. I like reading about your garden plans. I'll have to research peasant gardens. I can't store sweet potatoes in the bathtub. I use my bathtub every night. We got a new soaker tub last year and love it so much. I know a lot of people aren't soakers and a bathtub is just wasted space. Glad that it's being used for something productive. Moni, did you ever find a place for your sweet potatoes? I've been around, just busy with life. I was sick a couple of weeks ago. Everyone around me had the virus, so there's no reason to think that I didn't have it. Not bad. Just fever for a couple of days and fatigue. Not much gardening really. Just harvesting from the greens bed for daily salads. Rick is still puling turnips and rutabaga from the SG. We had a bit of broccoli to harvest and I'm still eating on it. Usually put it on the salads. The turnips too. The sauerkraut turned out lovely. I didn't get much, but I'm happy to have what we got. I just put cucumbers in the crock today to practice with fermenting pickles. Obviously, I purchased these cukes. Oh! I saw a seed rack at Walmart. They are beginning to get their seed starting stuff in. I bought a new seed tray with peat pellets. It holds 72, so I'll do half cabbage/broccoli and half lettuce/kale. That's probably all I'll do for the spring,, other than onions (and Rick will do potatoes and peas in the SG). Last night, I got all my seeds ordered for the year. Our budget is really tight right now, so I had to wait. Seems like the cost of everything went up last year. I am excited to get those seeds ordered, though. It's only 6. I should get those greens and brassicas started!...See MoreMay/June, first week of June 2022
Comments (38)I dug one garlic today and was a little disappointed. The garlic was small. I don't know what I planted, I just got odds and ends I had around here, and bought a few at the grocery store. I am thinking about removing more garlic and a bunch of walking onion tomorrow. The walking onions will just take over your place if they get the chance. When the sun drops a little lower, I plan making a spot for cucumbers. The cucumbers are more plants we don't need, I think we have a bunch of them in the wildlife garden also, but if I have a couple of plants here at the house it will be easy to just walk out and get them, plus I found these two plant in the junk I had left over, there are some peppers that I need to put in the ground also. I need to quit starting seeds, I seem to always wind up with plants running out my ears....See MoreShow Us Your Landscape and Gardens - A Photo Thread - October 2022
Comments (22)NHBabs, it makes my heart glad to see you enjoying every last minute of your NH vistas. I am so happy you will be near family, and happy you are soaking in as much beauty of your time here before you leave. I have loved ALL of your natural scenes in all seasons! Fothergilla was one of my "must haves' and I never got one. Yours sure are beautiful! I hope the next person in your home loves the beauty you left behind. Your amsonia color looks about equal or slightly better than mine in previous years. Mine are more full than yours, and I think this year I might actually get some decent color finally...maybe (see below). Thank you for posting a pic. PM, your yard looks amazing after the rains! You would never knew the experienced drought. Your mums look great. Are they perennial or annual? This is the fist year I am seeing decent yellow in my Amsonia hubrichtii. Murphy's Law--must be because I just posted my disappointment in them. here they are with beautyberries. I have a sapling witch hazel which I cannot figure out where to plant. It is in a pot, but this fall I got my first little flowers. I was so excited! My "i hate gardening" friend has some monkshood. Boy, am i going to work on getting some of this beauty! My Sheffield mums get smaller every year. I should divide them, but each spring it seems like they barely come back, so how do you divide that? I think voles damaged my asters, and then the deer pruned them way too late in the season. I am getting flowers finally, but they are all SMALL plants this year! Caldendula reseeds so happily, and it blooms until frost. This is one reseeding annual I am very glad to have. Finally, as the sun heads farther south to the horizon, it's glare on the water sparkles like diamonds. You can't see the sparkle, but I hope in this picture you can expand it and see how it shines....See Morehazelinok
