DW: Using Less Detergent. Does it REALLY Work for You?
Comments (4)"I guess my glasses will etch prematurely...." Not necessarily the case at all. Correct DW detergent dosage is heavily influenced by your water quality and quantity of water used. Over-dosing will result in etching over time. The correct dose won't. I believe what you've said is that you're not sure of your water quality or of the correct dose. "I have hard water....." How hard? For example 15 grains is an entirely different consideration than 6-7 grains. Both are much different from "soft" -- which is zero grains. Always best to know what you have. There are cheap/easy test kits you can buy at any hardware store if you want to find out. I will give you this example and suggest a way to get where you want to go. I have a new machine (Whirlpool) that uses less water than the old one. I have zero-grains soft water. For a full dirty load, I get excellent results from Cascade Complete (no phosphate) powder one level teaspoon prewash and two level teaspoons main wash. Perhaps you may use that as some sort of minimum starting place for your own dosage. In any event, that's clearly all that's required given my water quality. If I used more, that extra detergent would be looking for something more to work on....and that's where the etching begins. The basic task to use just enough and no more. How much that might be for your own water qualilty is something you'll be wanting to find out. With hard water it will certainly be more than my three teaspoon total...but how much more? Even without knowing your actual hardness, you can still start at, perhaps, my amount as a minimum and just increase the dosage gradually. Within just a few loads, you'll see how much is enough and then you'll know. Depending on your water quallty, it could well be that filling the main cup is what is required in your situation. If so, that still doesn't necessarily mean your glasses are going to etch. The thing is, you don't know right now. I'm suggesting that it's not all that hard to find out....See MoreDo You Have A Favorite Cheese ?
Comments (48)Sue, I like cottage cheese, too. When I lived in IN we used to get a brand called "Michigan Brand" or something like that. Have you had it? It tastes a lot like homemade. Don't have it down here, but I wish they did. Chisue, we usually do that pizza from leftover crab legs and I won't let Harry anywhere near them because I don't want any yucky shell in it. He's not so careful about it. C'mon down--I'll share! :-)...See MoreDo you use space bags for storage? do they really work?
Comments (20)I agree with Jakabedy - I used the bag for stuff I never used again. As a matter of fact, I just put the four love seat slipcovers I had in these bags out for Purple Heart. Mine were the vacuum-out-the-air kind. Mine did leak. Steph - I have asthma reactions to the very same things you mentioned! We get unscented products because of this. I cannot have ammonia or any heavy-duty cleaners. Gasoline or diesel exhausts and old-fashioned oil paints and stains also did me in. I stained a garden bench last Sunday, though, and it did me no harm. I think they finally got the worst chemicals out of stains. As for perfume, I get a tickle in my lungs that makes me cough uncontrollably. We had to stop going to the opera because of it. With opera tickets, you sit next to the same people each time because you all bought season tickets. One of the ladies near us must have had really offensive perfume, I just could not take it. It is no fun to spend the night strategically working to prevent myself from coughing. With your sensitivities, do you have an asthmatic reaction? Headaches?...See MoreDo you have a mattress you really, really like?
Comments (29)We have a Sleep Number bed, so old that the company was still called Select Comfort. It must be at least 20 years old, maybe 25. It's king size but has two air mattresses inside, so each can have the firmness they desire. My side has a slow leak that is getting worse, but the pump still works fine so I can reinflate it whenever I want. They have lots of models including ones that stay cool and ones where the head can raise and lower. We love it, and when we finally decide to replace it we'll probably get another one.
