backsplash dilemma

last year

my stove/oven is placed next to a wall. i plan to backsplash behind it of course, but do i backsplash the entire wall to the right? there are no cabinets, just wall.

Suggest duplicating the height that is behind stove. Hope you can provide a picture of the stove area, as it may make a difference.

@snicks0513 This is the first time we've viewed your post. Nice outcome. We've worked with Susan Jablon over the years with great experience. Also, kudos for stepping out of the box on the tile selection/design (it's refreshing to see character and color which works with your other materials). Good for you for advocating for a quality install. As industry supporters of educating the consumer about quality tile installations I wonder if you would be so kind as to expand just a bit more on your experience for the benefit of others in the community? Specifically, how did you go about finding/hiring the tile contractor that performed the final work? Secondly, are you aware of what he/she did differently to achieve a quality installation? And finally (I know $ is a sensitive topic at times but so important for establishing realistic expectations), what did you pay for the installation (not tile itself) that was done professionally ? This would be the bonus follow-up that wraps this learning experience for all. Thank you and congrats on the new space.

This is so interesting. I’ve never seen anyone attach a 4” bs to a tall cabinet. And your wet zone seems to be on the island. I hope it comes off easily. If you end up needing to repair it, your cabinet company can probably provide you with touch-up paint if you ask. My least favorite look is tile above a 4” splash. It’s the belt and suspenders look. But people do it. Do a Google search and see if you like it.

Is what is in your niche the same as what is on the shower floor? What is on the shower floor does not look uniform enough to be a good backsplash, but see if you can get tile in the same colors (or color) to use as a backsplash. Does the shower wall tile come in a smaller size? It doesn't have to be just 4" which is normal backsplash height, nor does it have to cover the whole wall. It could go to the bottom of your mirrors if you like that. But if done thoughtfully this could actually be an attractive accent in your bathroom. I am also posting a picture where they did something completely different (textured tile). If you have a good tile setter they should be able to work with whatever - be sure to have thought about the edges before starting. Schluter trims are low profile and appropriate in a contemporary room.

Only tile to the end of the Stove on that right wall. As shown above by @Maureen

If it is a full length wall with nothing on it. Still do the same as above and paint the rest of the wall.

More pictures of the space would really help to define what your talking about.

Range next to a wall is a fire hazard. You can reduce the hazard a bit by having tile on the wall, so I would definitely put backsplash on that wall. But tile, while not a combustible material itself, still will conduct heat from the air to the wall behind it. So while tiling that wall is an improvement over just having the wall next to the range, the material behind the wall that is consistently exposed to cooking heat may have a lowered ignition point. Conclusion - it's still a fire hazard to have a range next to a wall even when that wall is tiled. What you need is fireproof cement backer board behind that tile to be confident you don't have a fire hazard in your home.
