Flooding from Fay
Comments (15)Jan, in what area in Melbourne are you located? We are just north of Melbourne, in an unincorporated area at the Pineda Causeway and Wickham Road. We are fine, but the intersection was flooded this afternoon, so no one could get in our out of the subdivision. My siblings in Malabar and Palm Bay are fine, except the one in Palm Bay has a saturated septic system, can't flush the toilets. One friend in the Eau Gallie area of Melbourne has water in their house. Haven't heard from them since this morning. So far I haven't had too many problems with my 4 pooches and potty breaks. I go outside and check for snakes and other critters. Then I go inside and run them through the length of the house. Well, actually they run and I walk. We make a big game of it and by that time they don't care that it's raining outside. This is a relief (pun intended), because I had problems with them during the 2005 hurricane. If there had been any advance notice that we were going to have such prolonged rain, I would have bought some sod at HD. Then I could have put it on some plastic in the garage & we all wouldn't have gotten sopping wet for 2 days now. Patrick AFB is near here and as of 1am Thurday, it's had 21 inches of rain. A subdivision south of here (Wickham and Post Rds has had around 25 or 28 inches. They expect that we may get up to another 8 inches on Thursday. It's ironic about not knowing about the lingering rain. Next door neighbor on one side of me is a meteorologist; on the other side is one of the heads of the Cape, and they didn't know. The meteorologist is fascinated on how the storm is not fitting the computer models. I'm not interested, just hope it goes away so people get relief from all of the flooding. Good luck to all who are in Fay's path, or have been....See Moreadvice and prayers needed regarding severe flooding
Comments (40)Again, thank you everyone for all the prayers and positive thoughts. Yesterday we spent the day salvaging as much as possible. Lots of photos, my mom seems to have a gazillion, and we're not throwing out any. All the furniture has been trashed as well as the carpeting. We'll try and save the washer and dryer but the other appliances are all gone. The beds, couches, tv's, small kitchen appliances, just too much to remember everything although we are trying to keep inventory. Today was spent pulling out the last of the carpets, sweeping mud out of all the rooms, washing most of the stuff in the kitchen and doing a million loads of laundry at the laundromat. We've got some contractors in who will work through the night to pull out dry wall up to a foot above the water line which was at about 4 feet. They'll be removing all the insulation from the walls as well. Cleanup has been reasonable easy because we were lucky enough to have a lot of help from the local South African and Jewish communities as well as from total strangers. I can't thank enough the people who are helping total strangers, the 10 yr old who gave lunch (an apple, bag of chips, sandwich and homemade cookie) to anyone who wanted one and she had about 100 sandwiches she'd made, the adults who walked up to you and asked what they could do to help or the elderly couple handing out ice water from their grandchild's wagon. My mom's car has been officially written off and it's covered by insurance which is a good thing because almost no-one here, including my family, has flood insurance. FEMA is coming in tomorrow to do an assessment. Laurie, thanks for the links. Thanks to all of you I think we got in early on that one. We're staying with friends n Horseshoe bend which is upriver a bit. Here's a link to see the floods both in Horseshoe bend and River Plantation: http://www.newschannel5.com/Global/category.asp?C=125220&clipId=4751432&flvUri=&partnerclipid=&topVideoCatNo=0amp;autoStart=true&activePane=info&LaunchPageAdTag=homepage&clipFormat=flv When you see River Plantation, look how high the water came up, almost to the carport roofs. The lower houses in Horseshoe bend were almost half way up the first floor. There are dumpsters everywhere in HSB and driving down Sawyer Brown Rd is like driving between two trash levees 10 ft high and 15 feet wide all made of trash...furniture, lumber, carpets, dry wall, insulation, toys, clothing. It is the saddest thing I have ever seen. These are my pictures: http://s140.photobucket.com/albums/r26/LaniKaye221/Nashville%20floods/ Please continue to pray....See MoreTheme: Eat the freezer!
Comments (36)I am in a dumpling mood, so I'd combine with shrimp or water chestnut or other veg and make dumplings, potstickers, or shao mai! More generally on the freezer issue, we have a large upright that is terribly overfilled. My father is living with us, and he has no activity except to drive to Costco and buy hundreds of dollars of food that we don't want, that he has no plans to cook, and that we don't have room to store. For example, he might come back with 10 lb of prime rib, 10 lb of mussels, and 10 lb of strawberries and say "its for you" and then we have to have The Discussion. Which is, succinctly, that his purchases are causing us inconvenience and are a symptom of his hoarding illness and he has to stop. I've mostly gotten him to cut down on this, but a result is way too much meat in the freezer. It's not that having some meat in the freezer is a bad thing, but we don't actually want to eat beef that often, and it seems silly to buy fresh beef at elevated retail prices, just to stick it in the freezer for a year or more. Like I keep telling my dad, its not an investment....See MoreThe train derailment - thoughts
Comments (42)Mary, are you east or west of derailment? While this is serious, the media isn’t helping. Fanning flames of fear are not helpful. As a retired executive who had emergency responsibilities, once the fear cycle is put out there it is almost impossible to gain control and get solid info out there. You should really have no impacts that far away. As the cloud rises, more and more dilution takes place lessening air problems quite soon. Land and water can be contaminated but EPA should be onsite managing this. Don’t want to minimize effects. The National leaders have not got on top of this quickly enough. Sad politics seems to be impacting everything. No politics allowed when people are being impacted in any case. The stress created by media is probably more detrimental to health than anything. I feel for the people nearby because of the lack of leadership. Actually, the local US House of Rep. was the best spokesperson I have heard on this problem. He was caring, had specific facts, didn’t go beyond what he knew at the time and stated his actions and future actions. Well done. I don’t recall his name....See MoreOllieJane
