I see no windows so where are they? Maybe the issue is the range is too big IMO no one needs a48" range unless they cook for 20 3x a day. A good kitchen design never has blind corners and a sink that can be accessed without going past the range from the fridge to get to it. The island is the perfect spot for the sink put it there adn get a functional kitchen You have a very tight corner where the morning room starts and the kitchen ends IMO make the morning room a separate space with the sink removed and no joint of cabinets there at all. You hvae knives , cutting boards and no sink this is a mess get a proper independant KD and have a functional kitchen. BTW never come for help with rules that can't be broken The island is the right place for the sink close to the fridge and the kives and the cutting boards .

We just finished a kitchen remodel (my design, but we worked with the cab store’s design gal, who is very good and experienced), and I know things get tricky when you have a fairly large space…the distances between important areas can be quite long. I’m not sure why you don’t want the sink in the island, but it’s really a better spot than where you have it now. Your island is long enough that you can sacrifice the needed space for it, any maybe you can even add a few inches towards your morning room, IF you really need it. Having the sink near the range and closer to the fridge just makes more sense, esp since you cook and bake, which means frequent hand washing etc. (On your layout you say “oven”, im guessing you mean “range”?) Also: imagine having to drag a pot of cooked pasta from your range all the way to your sink’s current (on plan) location…..not ideal! (A pot filler can only fill the pot on site, not drain it, however.) Happy planning!

Patricia Colwell: I was typing while you were, apparently, and I was thinking the same thing. We, too, have a 48” range, and (thankfully!!) I don’t cook for 20 3 x/day! We have very limited wall space in our kitchen….there’s the area behind the range, and then there’s only the relatively short wall where fridge and breakfast station are; we have windows everywhere else (looking out to nature and mtn views), and we did not want to lose those. Since there’s zero space for double wall ovens, we went with the wider range (6 burners and a griddle), which is working out very well so far.

Aside from the issues of moving the sink - a main cooking component - outside the cooking zone, a main kitchen sink will never look like a bar sink. It's a work horse, and unless you are very fastidious with your dishes, it will LOOK like a kitchen sink - dirty dishes, dishes drying etc. You need landing space on both sides of a sink as well - that angled counter (if that's what it is) won't suffice.

If you cook and bake enough to need a 48" range then you will want a better kitchen layout.

The only way this works for cooking is by adding a prep sink on your island. That doesn't make the issue with a cleanup sink in the morning room go away, but at least it makes your cooking area functional. You still need a place to store dishes that come OUT of the dishwasher, and that should be close to the DW itself, not across the kitchen (and certainly not a walk though the work zone). If you add a prep sink, move the sink & DW over so you have space in that cabinet run to actually DO dishes. And know that your morning room will be less nice as, while people are trying to relax, someone might be right next to them at the sink cleaning up.

All this to say - your island is where your sink should go. I have the same kitchen layout. My island is 10x4. My DW is at the end, then my sink...and then I have almost 5 feet of counter for prep space. It's more than enough (that space is larger than the island at my last house was). Next to the sink is trash pullout, then I have a large 3 drawer stack with prep tools/mixing bowls etc. The only thing I wish I had that I don't is a skinny vertical cabinet for cutting boards there.

If you keep a 48" range, make sure you consider the ventilation. Most range hoods for a 48" range require a makeup air system and duct sizes in the 10"-12" range (and cost a lot - I priced it out for our kitchen and it would have been about 10k). We went with a 36" rangetop and were able to do an 8" duct with a passive makeup air system, which is much less expensive. If you do not have that system in your house now and your range is not on an exterior wall, that might be problematic. Definitely do not DIY the ventilation.

Assume your fridge is built in? If that is a busy aisle in your home you may want to make it wider. Ours is 4'-3" or so and feels too tight. I wish I had made it 5'.

Also a 15" overhang is recommended for counter seating. The cabinets you have on the back of your island will be difficult to access regularly anyway so you're better off making them shallower. You need to consider support for your counter especially with two overhangs.

Why not put the fridge and pantry on that morning room wall? That would look more polished than a sink and dishwasher. And if you put the microwave there as well, it's a logical snack station adjacent to the eating area. With a prep sink in the island, you have a decent fridge/range/sink work triangle. Your primary sink and dishwasher can go on the right wall, where you've planned the fridge and pantry.

Curious, what is the reason why you prefer the sink not in island?

I would not want the main sink on end like the layout posted above.

Coray explains some good reasons.

Walking around that corner constantly while cooking & prepping food would be an

aggrevating issue for a cook.

It would mess up the cooking,prep flow.

It's also not recommended to have a main sink on end of cabinet run because there's no landing room on end & the occasional splash or spill could possibly run down the end side of cabinet & be an extra thing to clean & possibly cause water damage over time.

In the photo of the bar, the smaller bar sink is centered in a bigger cabinet which gives some counter space to end. That's ok for a mini bar. but not for the main used sink.

Here's an idea....

Get 2 sinks.

Make the 144" wall a mini bar / main washing dishes station.

Put a wide enough sink to soak your widest baking pot/baking sheet flat & dishwasher & trash pullout. Add whatever you prefer like a mini fridge or microwave over there.

Then put a semi-wide prep sink in island. (not a mini bar sink that has little true function)

Make sure the prep sink is a deep one bowl,

Wide enough to put the pots you mainly cook with to fill & dump hot water during cooking.

Wide enough to wash cutting boards & let collanders set in sink to drain.

It could be centered in island or off center close to fridge,

but keep enough landing room when the cook pulls out food

from fridge to island to make some delicious food.

(reminder....keep all sinks away from ends of counter)

I say switch this last idea around: prep sink in the morning room, your main sink in the island. it simply IS the better location.

Just to answer a couple of the questions:

Windows are shown. They fill the wall of the morning room and there are none along any of the kitchen or side walls. Exception is the sliding door, also shown.

Why don’t I like the sink on the island: I don’t understand how that space doesn’t look cluttered and messy with dishes and drying racks, etc. It’s the first thing people will see when they come in and I’d hate for it to be a pile of dishes. Additionally, I think it’s going to mess with the best part of the useable surface right behind the oven. So, I’d have smaller surface areas to place dishes, baking trays, etc. that’s a prime standing area when entertaining, but folks will have to reach around the sink or not be able to stand there.

Why a 48” range: we need a minimum 36” based on how we cook now. I’m constantly limited on how many pans I can fit on the stove top. I currently have wall double ovens, a 48” range allows me to have a double oven set up and to eliminate the wall ovens.

Another note: for the flow, our current sink is a 90 degree pivot from what’s shown in the draft. So the path from the fridge past the island and cooktop is what we currently do. In this design we just wouldn’t turn around the island, we’d go another foot straight. What we do now is not a big deal, but I do understand the reason there’s a kitchen triangle rule. I tried to attach a pic of the kitchen and morning room (current messy play room), but I don’t know if it worked.

Here is your plan with the clean-up zone and prep path diagrammed. The most valuable prep real estate is between the sink and range, and you have a tiny triangle. The distance between the sink/prep and fridge is more than the NKBA recommended limit of 9' (I'll include links below).

Here's the plan with a prep sink on the island. I like separate clean-up and prep zones so I left the main sink as you drew it--but it could go in the island. Trash would still work well on the right of the prep sink, to be shared by both zones. I would turn the MW toward the fridge so anyone using it is not in the primary prep zone:

If form is more important than function--that's OK, as long as you understand the difference and don't start having regrets as soon as the paint is dry in the new kitchen--which should be a space where you are comfortable and enjoy working, whatever your personal preference.

The sink can go where the range is. Range to the frig location 36"+ wide drawer lowers for those runs. The frig goes to the wall where you have the sink. Oversized range and sink in this space could be replaced with a 30 or 36" Bosch induction range and a 24"- 28" sink without loss of function.

This area is never going to look or function well.

Whether you put the sink in the island or put it on the wall in the morning room if you have a drying rack and dishes in the sink it’s going to be cluttered and unkept no matter what. It really doesn’t take much to wash, dry, and put away the dishes all at the same time and store the dish rack under the sink for easy access. As others have stated, the island is the best place for the sink.

I'm very surprised that no one has commented yet about the very, very tight aisle you will have between the island and the sinnk run. It looks like it's around 24".

I’m just a homeowner contemplating my own weird kitchen redesign, so you can appropriately weigh my comments. We both have similarly sized spaces and (on my part, at least) unwanted peninsulas. I see a lot of ideas in yours that I’ve had for mine.

I’m wondering if continuing the cabinetry into the breakfast nook feels right? Will you be using that space for dining in the future? If not, maybe continue the island down that direction and make it huge? And that might help incorporate the workspace where you currently have the sink.

The other thing I’m wondering is if your sink and the corner of your island feel like a pinch point.

Please consider getting a certified Kitchen designer to plan this space. Kitchens are such a huge expense I'd hate for you to spend all that money and have a poorly functioning one. That being said here are a few thoughts and ideas:

Your island isn't functional. It's big but not functional. You will have a very difficult time accessing those undercounter cabinets on the backside where you hope to have seating. Trust me. I had a similar situation at my last house. Luckily I didn't need it for everyday storage - only things I rarely used.

It would be best to put your main sink, dishwasher and trash drawer in the island. It will make prep, cooking and cleanup much more efficient and therefore more enjoyable.

I'd consider moving the pantry from the fridge wall to the morning room. That way you have more usable counter space as well as storage.

I think it's a great idea to put a mini bar/coffee are in the morning room. I'd put it just to the left of the new pantry (that was moved from the fridge wall) Add a bar sink and open shelving and it will look great!

FYI - I went from a 36" cooktop and double ovens to a 48" range. I hate it! Most 48" ranges have one large oven and a tiny second oven. The small oven is only 13" wide inside. Nothing fits in it except a pie plate or a very small caserole dish.

I’d do the prep sink on the island like mamagoose suggested orherwise you have no reasonsble prep space. i am totally with you on not wanting main sink on the island. you have to design a kitchen for your needs - mine are similar with piles of ziplocs and kid lunchboxes and sheetpans out to dry. telling someone it’s easy to dry things does not make my kitchen magically unclutter itself lol. i do agree you need to shorten the island or it’s going to be tough to get to the cleanup. and if i had 2 ovens i’d want 2 that fit full size sheet pans - a 48” range isn’t going to get you that. you may use it differently though.
