Pinus pumila 'Blue Dwarf'. Bright red, numerous pollen cones. A great contrast. Pinus mugo 'Short Needle'. Loads of curious white cones. Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Pendulum'. Cones at the top of this upright weeper.

Hi Ian ( I presume, according to your blog) That's a nice guide on how to grow P. strobus. The pictures of the different stages of the seedling are very informative. I think that you misunderstand the meaning of cultivars. They're are all Pinus strobus (Pinus strobus is a white pine), just like yours, however, most of those posted here are a special cultivar, which are slightly different from the one you have (which I presume is a regular forest species). Gorgeous animals. You scored dude. Be sure to leave 1/3 of the broom on the tree so you can come back, again. Resinosa is of the most-difficult to propagate, hence, leaving a portion. Congratulations man. Wait for a warm period before you collect. That enhances the chances of success 10-fold. A week is great, if at all possible. I won't be grafting until the third week of Feb. this coming year. Just a fyi. Of course scions last two weeks in the crisper in the fridge, w/o much harm. Even six weeks, they'll stay alive. I'm going to take a soil sample and determine if the soil is unusually acetic or alkaline. The soil is sandy, but so is the soil where the pines are dark green. It is on the edge of an area where a lot of the the stumps were dumped when the area was cleared and dug out. I know decaying hardwood robs nitrogen. Soft wood to a lesser degree, I assume (?). There are stumps lying above ground 10 or so feet from the "gold" pines as I recall. None of the stumps are buried; they are all above ground. It is possible that some chunks may be oak, but 95% of the trees felled were pine. My best guess is they are pine, but if I take a screwdriver to them I should be able to tell if they are pine or oak; any bark is long gone. I'll get a shot of the trees with the stump location as well. If my memory serves me there are other normal pines just as close, but I will have to double check on that. Alley cat, I just heard on the news that today was the first day since July 21st that it was not raining in some part of New England. It has been wet this summer and we only had a short heat wave that did not affect anything around here. The trees are sitting on the side of a sandy hill with never any standing water near it, even after some of the plus 3 inch rains we have had this summer. I would rule out weather, drought or flooding. Jon
