Inputs for designing my space living room and fireplace area.

Hey Everyone,

We recently moved in to new home and I bought a navy blue couch and a chaise. I would love your inputs on how to decorate the tv space and the fireplace area. We are going to replace the rugs as of now. would love your inputs on how to decorate the space such as furniture, plants, decor walls, paintings etc.

There is only 1 picture and it's not dark but we need to see more of the room. I only see the blue sofa no chaise. Please post more pictures of the wall the sofa is facing. What size is the rug?

The current rug is 5*7, but i want to order a 7/10 size.

Caminne, that is a BRILLIANT idea, because I definitely need as much bookcase space as I can squeeze into every room, and at the moment there are no built-ins. Now, les917 cautioned against putting something just to the left of the door as you come in (i.e. on the living-room side of the door), to avoid cramping people (or dogs) as they step around the door, which I think it good advice. But if you look at my floorplan, you can see that there's quite a bit of space between the front door and the front wall windows. Floorplan: I think it should be possible to put a bookcase so it more or less lines up with the left side of the entrance to the dining room, which is about where I'd want the living room rug to end and the entryway rug to start. (Not describing this too well, but will try to photoshop a furniture-arranging floorplan soon.) In any case, I think that would leave plenty of clearance to get around the door - more clearance than you'd have in the entry to most historic rowhouses around here, anyway. That would preclude using the big desk as a sofa-table-type room divider, but I think it would solve two serious storage problems at once. I wonder if it would even be possible to have two bookcases back to back, with one facing the living room for books and the other offering baskets for leashes and mittens and whatnot on the door side. I'm thinking maybe about 36" high - high enough to make a divider, but low enough not to block light and to make it easy to put things down on top of. Hmm....

Sit down dinners for eight? Well, you will certainly be hanging your capacious cookware from that potrack! The dimensions of the room don't allow for a dining table the size needed for eight people to be up all the time, but there are a few ways around that. One is a console table that when folded has a small silhouette and functions as a sofa table that you put behind the sofa table to hold a lamp, your remotes, a drink, etc. When you need it, it expands, and expands, and expands! With that you can use collapsible folding chairs and there are some very nice ones, including wood ones that you can store under your bed, along with the very long tablecloths. In fact, there is an article about just that sort of table on Houzz. Then you may or may decide to not get a small table for two or as you initially thought, just get two bar stools. I would wonder first if I wanted to match the white paint as in the kitchen (white?) also, if I love the wood of the kitchen cabinets and hardware to be able to keep a uniform base for the rest of the home. You have white trim, okay, great start to be able to open the space up. Rugs: runner at the entry, at least a 8x10 in the living area, and at least a 5x7 for the dining area. How about coordinating curtains for this space. Is the dining room a sliding door? Because the hanging blinds in the livingroom suit more a sliding door spot. Rather have blinds or shades paired with curtains if both just windows. Rods and knobs in a coordinating finish as the kitchen knobs. The round table in the rectangular dining space seems off. Would love to sneak a peak at your lighting fixtures. Your entry table setup looks nice, what is your style, the table in the dining space seems cottage, the sofas heavy, could we get more of a view of the other corner of the fireplace? How about a curio on long wall in dining area. A table with a bench on the kitchen side would be nice.

You buy a nice low console appropriate to the tv size, and mount the tv. above it. : ) or incorporate some shallow built in, without crowding the hallway passage

Decorating the walls is the last step once furniture etc is in place

Ok now I see it was the chaise in the 1st picture you posted. The room is large so I would do 2 areas. One around the FP and one for the TV. The sofa/sectional is large and the rug should be wider than it. Move that rug to the FP area and get a larger one for TV area. It may need to be 8x10 or even 9x12 depending on the width of the sofa/sectional. The rug should be 12" wider on each end of the sofa/sectional. Get a console for under the TV that is at least 25% wider than the TV. IKEA Besta is a great modular system for this. You may need to lower the TV to comfortable viewing height. In the TV area center the rug on the FP. Place the chaise facing the FP. Get 2 swivel chairs for each side of the FP. I would add window treatments to the windows near the TV.

A floor plan with windows, doors fireplace etc would be helpful. Also, is there an area of this room you could dedicate as a play area, assuming there is a young person(s)?

Thanks for all your suggestions. I dont have a floor plan but i am working on the ideas provided by all of you and should be able to provide some updated pictures soon. I'd love to have your inputs after rehashing the place.

i am keeping the design style eclectic, as I love to have some color in the space.

Pls stay tuned as I add an indoor swing and a coffee table near the couch area.

hi Everyone , here is my updated space. Iam happy with the fireplace area. The TV Area still needs work. I would love for your suggestions on how to decorate the corners and the coffee table. I plan to change the rug, console table as well. Pls let me know your thoughts and suggestions. Looking fwd. I am happy to change the coffee table as well if needed.
