Backsplash behind range hood?

We are finishing up building a new house. I have a 36" gas cooktop and a Winflo Stainless Steel hood, wall mounted. The builder and I were discussing whether to end the backsplash at the bottom of the hood or continue the backsplash behind the hood. I said end the backsplash at the bottom of the hood but I am now rethinking that after looking at several pictures. I have cabinets on both sides of the hood.

We ended ours at the bottom of the hood. Because the hood acts as the linear line between cabinets it's a natural end point for the tile.

It depends upon the hood, stove, cabinets, countertop, tile, and kitchen design. Provide images of all that information and you will get better educated direction.

The house is still under construction so I will do my best to include pictures that I have. This is the area in the kitchen where the hood will be installed above the gas cooktop. The cabinets are antique white. The cooktop is stainless and the countertop is Cosmos White Drift. There is an 8 ft. island which contains the sink and dishwasher. Since the hood is not available yet, I included a picture from the website. It has glass on the bottom. I did not remember the crown at the top of the cabinets. I have looked at a lot of pictures and there are so many various ways to handle this. I appreciate any suggestions as they will be installing the hood and backsplash soon.

What kind of 'look' are you going for? Or is your motivation strictly functional? If your motivation is functional, I'd think either would work, but that at stove-top level, 30" would look more appropriate. The extra 3" on either side at the back of the stove would probably bother me much more than a 3" 'shortfall' at hood level. Jut my personal opinion, but if you're going for a 'commercial look' though, I'd rethink the idea. The combination of stainless range, splash and hood makes for a 'vertical column' effect, which might make your range look too narrow to carry off a commercial style, which I tend to think of as more 'chunky.'

Here is the tile...I will lay them vertically behind the range. I bought some 2"x2" coordinating glass tiles to make up some of the space since these are not quite long enough (I have 30" from my range to the range hood although part of that is hidden by the 5" riser on my range). Sjhockeyfan, that was what I was thinking and why I asked. I was also thinking that I will have them continue the backsplash even with the counters behind the range just in case I ever get a slide-in range, you know? My range is a great GE profile and only 3 years old so it shouldn't be soon, but just in case. It's settled, and I am relieved that for once the simpler option wins out.

It will be quite a while before we get our niche finished behind the range so there's no photo to share, but you might be glad to be reminded that a niche is an option. If you are not put off by using salt, bottle of oil, etc. as a focal point behind the range, it's a handy thing for a working kitchen. It doesn't have to be made of tile. I went to Sears to measure the backs of ranges before we made our plans. If I recall correctly, there was one that was 48 inches high at the back; many were 47. Here's one thread about niches... When cabinets do not go to the ceiling, neither should the backsplash.

What are you planning to use as the backsplash? Make sure the clearance is ok from the stovetop for whatever the backsplash material is and if necessary use the required backguard.
