Windows Design Dilemma

Awkward windows

last year

Hello everyone,

i have just signed a lease in a cute historic Tudor apartment building. The only trouble is the living room windows… They are asymmetrical and both in the corner. I am really trying to somehow use drapes, at least on the larger window. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions? I have been scratching my head over this! Thanks!

I would say 2 pieces of curtains could be used to cover these two windows from left to right and from above the window frame to the floor.

However, the left and right 2 sides of the window frame are basically at the edge of the wall, the layout here might look particularly cramped.

So using some curtain tiebacks to create some space to make the whole space look more chic and fresh would be a choice!

Or I would suggest decorating the larger window first, and using Roman shades, blinds or decorative paintings to cover the smaller window on the left. Here are some inspo for the larger window treatment.

You have a heater there so drapes are not really going to be functional. I would do a nice roman shade on the large window and leave the small one.

Wow thank you Karen and Kimber, those are great suggestions. It will be difficult to move the window because it's a strata duplex and I would need permission to alter the building envelope. That being said I should cost it out , maybe it'll be less expensive than I think and something to push for. The plumbing comes from the other side of the wall. Original builders put the vanity in the laundry room - my house is weird like that, and it's very expensive to take up subfloor and move the plumbing. The waste pipe is already running horizontally from the current sink which isn't great, so I'm not sure about adding a second sink. I think I'll look into the cost of that too (moving plumbing) as this will be my bathroom for a long time and yah this dang window is messing it up haha. Have you looked at solar shades? To me they look modern without making a big statement. I like your idea of a single rod to cover all three -- the trick will be to find the right design and fabric -- custom for sure. Lovely room!

I think sloar shade inside mount on the lower window will give you the ability to control the heat and the UV and let you keep the view and have privacy during the day at night you will need some kind of panel to go from left to right for night time privacy . The uppers If heat and light are going to be continual issues from those then a fixed solar shade .I would look at a panel for the big window in a fabric that looks like a piece of art and have it slide acroos the window at night . Look at Marimekko farics for this there are some really cool ones . I do not know your style but this is one that would work with a modern interior

@texmax13 But I think it might help with ”location limiting art choices”. Just needs a different point of view. Adding blinds gives the window some structure & ”importance”. There’s really no rule about centering art over the bed. Nightstands & lamps will provide the symmetry & different unstructured or layered look bedding adds another level of interest. For art, instead of one larger piece that really wants to be centered, consider a gallery effect of several pieces - one larger pieces with some related smaller pieces. Related means similar frames style or color, or similar / related subject matter. With the different sizes of art, the window blends in to the entire scheme on the wall. As I said, just another POV! ETA Your 3rd pic in original post is an example of what I’m envisioning! it justshows a bigger window.

Thanks all! i think i might make custom drapes for the window on the right, have them pleated and half the standard width, at 27” wide each panel, and only use them for decorative purposes so they wont ever be closed. I think i will use a French Return Rod so it uses the least amount of space.

Then i cant add a roman shade to to the smaller window using the same fabric.
