Door hinge hole pattern issue

I have purchased two different sets of hinges for my front door (Metal). The holes in the door are threaded, so I don't want to try to re-hole the door.

The one set of hinges the hole pattern doesn't line up with the holes in the door.

The other set would align - spacing is right, but it is opposite, so If I put the hinge on aligned with the holes in the door the hinge doesn't close.

What I seem to need is a hinge with holes where the yellow paper is on the picture below.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Very simple the manufacturer of the steel door will have replacements in various finishes. Should be on the door somewhere (possibly even on the hinges) and visit a local lumberyard. Off the shelf hinges will never match as the steel door companies typically have their own hinges manufactured with a hole pattern for just this reason.

can't you look for a diff hinge that meets your hole requirements??

If you reversed them, would that match up?

If you flip it upside down the holes are in the same place

If you put it on where the holes are the hinge is facing the wrong direction

I have looked high and low for one with the right pattern with no luck - Home Depot, Lowes, Ace and an independent hardware store as well as on line.

The door is held on with two of the original 3 hinges, but the handy man who took the 3rd original hinge to see if he could find a match says he gave it back to me, but I don't have it.

Hate to replace a door because I can't find a new hinge that fits.

In my experience you'd have to be very lucky to have the hinge mortises match and line up. Fortunately cutting them on only one door is a matter of a few minutes with a chisel and knife (use the knife to score the corners if your hinges have rounded corners). For the latch side you can probably use the pre-bored door and move the latch mortise as required so that it fits, making a "dutchman" repair in the door frame as necessary. Otherwise you can buy a door boring jig for ~$30 and put the knob wherever you want it. You can bore a door freehand, but the jig greatly reduces the chance for error.

For something as light as a screen door I would consider putting threaded rivets into the jamb and using machine screws to hold the hinge.

Taking into consideration your comments and suggestion, I took a much closer look at all the hinges - new and old. Some of the Liberty hinges are not sitting as tight at the inset as the old hinges. The outside of the hinge that screws to the cabinet is also off slightly which is why a shadow of the old hinge is visable. Additionally, the entire hinge sits farther away from the doors than the older hinges. All of these variances are very slight, but when combined they make a hugh difference. Oddly enough, not all of the new hinges fit the same, hence being lucky with the first two I bought. Even though they must stamp out these hinges, they are not the same. The question still remains as to what I am going to do. I called Amerock and they said they would consider sending me samples to try. A representative from one of the local kitchen cabinet companies at the home show yesterday recommended a local hinge company. I am going to go there to see if they can identify the manufacturer of the old hinges and can offer up a better replacement. Internet searches have still not provided any identification of the old hinge manufacturer's logo. Please let me know if you can think of any other ideas or suggestions.

We had the same issuewith a 40+ year old door and ended up cleaning and spray painting the hinges that were there.

that's why I asked about the original door hinges. Just clean them up and reuse.

for the 3rd one you don't have, I'd fill in the holes that are there w/a good wood glue and sawdust shavings. (you could also use toothpicks!) let it cure. then I'd drill new holes to fit the new hinge.

If you can’t find them anywhere and reusing what you have isn’t an option, maybe you can have them custom made. There’s no telling how much it would cost, but these folks are in Michigan and you can request an estimate.

Just wrote to https://www.guden.com for an estimated cost for 1 or 3 new hinges.

They have a minimum order of $25.00 and will make custom hinges or drill custom hole patterns from blanks. Crossing my fingers that they aren't too outrageously priced.

Will let you all know the outcome.

@millworkman - Thank you - I did check the door for a manufacturer, but will look again - 60 years and layers of paint may be hiding it. Will check with the lumberyard before ordering anything custom.
