I need a quick fix.

last year

In a year or so we will be replacing everything and adding an addition to the house but for now I want to make the front look better. I'm willing to change the door, shutters, gutter, light fixtures, furniture and decor but I'm not sure what colors or material the use. Anyone have any ideas or inspiration?

Will all of the changes make it through the addition? Or are you talking just discarding 20K and doing something else then?

I think you would be best served by your architect who is planning the addition, to also plan the exterior renovations, and do those at the same time as the addition.

In the mean time, paint the door a happy color. A quart of paint is an instant pick me up!

There won't be an architect. My husband is a contractor. Between us and my parents (also contractors) we have alot of materials i could use. I don't want a happy color, I want a good coordinating color and ideas on how to make it not look so flat and dull.

katishooked...I found a way to add color to my flowers, especially if you have a lot of clear glass. I had some CD's that were colored (orange, purple, blue, black) and they were dude CD's, so I put them behind the candle holder part of the flower. They add beautiful irridescent color to the flowers. Gibsona.... Nice flowers!! Anny

Leaking Windows

Leaking windows are usually a symptom of improper flashing, as you deduced. Fix those sills right away to prevent further moisture damage to your beautiful, original windows. You can actually DIY the sills if you can use a saw and have free weekends. Sill stock is sold pre-primed at all the big box home improvement stores. Sills are time-consuming to replace, but your original windows were built with provisions for repairing and replacing any part of them. Fix the drips, but remember that your original wood windows aren't meant to be completely air- or water-tight. The wood needs a chance to breathe and exchange water vapor. You are to be commended for wanting to keep, and to keep up your original windows. I learned how to restore, maintain, and troubleshoot wood windows because I didn't have the money to pay someone else to do so. If DIYing interests you, check out www.historichomeworks.com. I think I understand what you have now. I will say that blacktop patch would give you good traction and have other benefits. First, being black it'd absorb the sun, heat up so on a nice day it should melt, solving part of the problem. It's a rough texture so that would help. It's cheap, about $5 for a 40# bag (you'd probably need several bags). And it'd make a slope instead of the bump. I used it to build up in front of my garage skirt and my sister used it to build up her driveway next to the house to slope it away from the foundation. But you'd need it fairly clean and dry so you'd need a reasonably nice an sunny day and keep the patch in the house until you use it. You could warm things up with a salamander heater and a couple heavy tarps. That should bring the temp up enough to get a patch on. It probably wouldn't be very permanent but it might help you get through the winter. Looks like we're having an old fashioned one this year! Oh, and you could mix in some pea rock or something too. Even some larger stuff to make a rougher surface. Don't hesitate to overlap it onto the garage skirt if you wanted although if you wanted to take it off later, it might not be easy. Chipping Cement - Quick, Inexpensive Fix?

Our back patio cement is chipping and was actually chipped when we purchased the house 8 years ago. We took care of more pressing problems first and now it's time for the patio. We plan is to build a deck over the existing cement patio. However, I need a quick fix. My niece just asked to have her baby shower in our backyard. I'm wondering if anyone can recommend something that's inexpensive that we can use to cover up this area as a short term option. I want it to look nice for the baby shower but don't want to spend a tremendous amount of money. The patio is chipped all away across the edge (closest to the bottom of the image.) My initial thought was to buy some type of large paver to cover the area but I don't know how it would be held up at the end where it's chipped.

I think you will be better served planning the whole exterior so it smoothly transitions to the new addition. The overall plan will be more cohesive if make all the decisions before you try to patchwork quilt the exterior. You would hate to pick things that will clash with the new addition. You only have six pictures in your idea book. A few evenings spent searching through traditional exteriors or other phrases that appeal to you on Houzz will help you decide what makes your heart happy. Save them to your idea book and be sure to make notes about why it drew your attention. I found it useful to save pictures of things I didn’t like-for example, “this color too bright”, this light too fancy”, “this trim too heavy”. When we were building a house, I realized that all the pictures I had saved had a common theme and color scheme that grabbed me. I looked in my closet and saw a majority of my wardrobe was blue-and realized not a room in my house had blue! It is my happy color! I use it liberally now that I know it makes me smile.
