Bay window to regular windows

I am wondering what the cost would be to take out the bay window structure, salvage the windows and make the wall flat using the windows from the bay window?

Depends, to some extent, on what the exterior construction consists of. If you have a roof kit that attaches to the wall or is flashed to the wall, you are going to have more "clean up" work to make it look original.

+1. Lots of variables here including the type of windows that exist. You will probably have a hard time finding someone willing to do this job at any price, and if you do, it will probably be more expensive to try and reuse those than to just get a new flat bank of windows to install. I can't tell from the pic if there is some historical relevance to the windows or something like that, but if the thought is cost-savings, I'd reconsider.

+1 . Far to many variables to quote accurately, and furthermore, they price that he or I may quote may be nowhere near what a company in your area might charge ( for better or worse) .... Just for the sake of a relative comparison, I'd order the, as follows : French door or bay window: $3-$5k Sliding door $2k Window $500-$2k depending on size options etc. I'll reiterate that these prices are beyond ballpark, and possibly not even in the same zip code, but at least should give you some ability to decide which options may or may not be worth the expense. I assume that is what you were looking for? ... Also, you did not mention if this will be installed into a new addition, or cut in to an existing wall. That will profoundly affect the price as well. A regular window or sliding door will offer function and value overall. The French door or bay will add more drama at a higher cost. Whether or not that is worth it depends on your personal preference, and the style of your home.

By cafe curtains, do you mean the tiered set? I'm just not sure what that means? I always think of kitchen curtains! How would I mount a curtain rod from the ceiling? I once had regular curtain rods before I put in the seat, but with the roller shades, there is no place to put the rod hooks. I don't want to block off the windows as in the first photos-I mostly need to be able to block the extreme sunlight and provide some evening privacy if needed.

Hi Jenny, I think the problem is not just that it's dark. It's that we can't discern a welcoming entrance and that makes us subconsciously uncomfortable. So I think all the white will help address the hidden entrance. Also the garage is over emphasized. The two plants on either side emphasize the garage even more. I'd trim those down so they are so prominent. I like the white, too. I would put on a porch but since your husband votes no for that I'd try some easier fixes: paint the door and door trim white, get a new light fixture, leave it on during the day, paint the trim around the alcove white, move the chairs and flower pots as it makes the alcove crowded, widen your steps so they run across the whole alcove. You can then move your pots to ground level. I think perhaps the back wall that the door is set into needs to be all white. After these easy fixes, if it needs more, I'd consider possibly adding additional trim work around the alcove to emphasize it more. It's possible to have the alcove area paneled with Azek or boards and painted all white. You can also do something with your landscaping to emphasize the front alcove and make it clear where the welcoming entry to the house is so it isn't so lost in the shadows. For instance a "runway" effect of small boxwoods (not sure if boxwoods are weather proof for your area) on each side of the sidewalk. Additional plants could round out the area as the designer indicated above but having that straight line to your front door I think would emphasize the alcove. Additional ideas - just brainstorming - these may not be good ideas - a pergola around the alcove (search on "pergola at entrance" on houzz), pergola over the garage doors to break up the triangle there. Trellis in white of course alongside the garage parallel to sidewalk. Paint the garage door white to break up the huge expanse of one color (which makes it appear even larger.) Extend roof over alcove forward so you can add a single white pillar at the corner. Look at how the white trim around the bay window is fairly wide and has a lot of presence. I think you need to produce that white outline around the alcove in the same way - wide enough to have presence to draw the eye. The darkness of the alcove may not even matter if the white outline is there to show where the doorway is. There appears to be existing trim outlining the alcove (at least at top and on right hand side). If it isn't wide enough - doesn't have enough presence - you can have an additional layer of wider trim attached to it at a fairly economic cost. remove windows save if possible, rebuild front of building, is there is a cantiliver on the foundation.

More work there than just flattening the wall. Matching siding, possible asbestos, framing, etc. I would leave well enough alone and just replace the 3 windows as inserts.

The bay window is causing the house to sag. Either want to put a flat wall with new windows or would replacing it with a whole new bay window cost less?

How is the window causing the house (wall?) to sag. If your house is sagging, you may have foundation issues.

I think it is not window, but water causing a wall to sag…..

Can you post pictures of evidence of the sag.

If that window was original to the house, sagging as of now is an indication of a larger issue. Is the window was added after the fact, then someone didn't structure that window opening properly.

this is the bathroom right above, very slanted , the bay window is slanted but its hard to get a good picture of it. My boyfriend plans on putting jacks in the basement. trying to figure out the my cost effective thing to do for the bay window. ( upstairs bathroom will be completely renovate)

Be careful doing this as it is seldom that simple. You may end up making the structure worse or simply unsafe by doing this incorrectly.

Oooh, your home looks older and has some lovely features like the wood in that bathroom. Older homes can sag and look crooked, so I think getting a professional in here for structural help is necessary.

+1 on MWM's comments about this not being that simple, as well as the earlier comments that the bay is not causing your house to sag. You have some other structural issues here, likely in the foundation. This is a job for a professional.

Definitely not a job for someone inexperienced to try and do. If something is not done right, it could be a big nightmare. It has to be foundation, since the bathroom window is slanted too. Once its repaired, the bathroom, and the bay, should be corrected by the repair. Please call a experienced foundation specialist to look at it.
