sodium percarbonate for string algae
Comments (11)I hope you post your results. I don't personally think using an oxidizer is a great idea for the kinds of ponds I've kept, but like to read what others try. And I might keep a different kind of pond in the future. Other oxidizers you may want to consider are Baquacil oxidizer and potassium permanganate. Not saying these are better or worst. In addition to the excellent points sleepless made I'd add that if it does kill the algae it still needs to be removed from the pond. A pond full of string isn't a big risk to fish, but a pond full of dead and decaying string algae can be as it consumes O2. And later, after the string algae decomposes your water may not be very clear from all the tiny bits of dead algae. The dose quoted may not result in a noticeable death of string algae. Normally oxidizer treatments are repeated until the desired result is obtained. A single massive dose can kill fish. And "massive dose" is related to how much stuff there is in the pond to react with. If the oxidizer reacts with stuff quickly there's less risk to fish. The longer elevated levels are kept the greater the risk. You are on the right track if you do want to use an oxidizer. Many people seem to think a cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide will kill a pond full of string algae. The reality is large amounts must be used, right up to the edge of killing fish....See MoreAroma aside, is Tide the same as Gain+sodium percarbonate?
Comments (2)I guess so. I counted 19 ingredients for Ultra Tide HE powder and 14 for Ultra Gain HE powder. Tide, besides oxy bleach and an activator, has one more enzyme in it. Really a shame about thw US powders. In Europe, P&G's newest Ariel powder has seven enzymes. I think your best bet are Tide Pods with five enzymes - again lacking oxy. If your happy with Gain's cleaning power, adding oxy bleach would be a good solution for your whites, imo. Comments (1)You can buy smaller amounts at regular stores that carry the Ecover brand. I only use a T or so at a time and it lasts a long time. YMMV, but its a good way to see if you like the results without plunking down a lot of $$ for a big hurkin tub of the stuff. You would need to look in the Natural Foods section of the store or go to a store that specializes in Health Foods or whole foods....See MoreHousehold Uses for Sodium Percarbonate pdf
Comments (4)I did some research on sodium percarbonate. .lol..thank you maylingsmom and aamassther, sodium percarbonate will work at lower temps, however it will take much longer, after temps reach 140degrees or above it will work much faster, I appreciate knowing this, since I no longer need to worry about the pot of boiling water, generally If I'm using the stuff its in a load I'm soaking for hours or overnight, so my hot tap set at 130 degrees is plenty hot enough for a long soak, however if I was not soaking, just washing a load normal wash time and no soak, the water temp would need raised otherwise it wouldn't be enough time for the stuff to be beneficial. So conclusion, if using hot water the soak time can be drastically cut, even working to its full potential in a normal wash time, but cooler temps would require more time, that would benefit with a soak. I will stash my soup pot away, no more carrying boiling water, I'll save it for my boil washes, lol....I expect my kids will be very happy knowing this lol..thank you all much....See MorePat Z5or6 SEMich
