Pretty room! Of your two, I prefer the gray because I think it looks richer. Or what about a green for a tone-on-tone look? This wall color looks similar to yours. These are from Ballard. Or are your walls more blue? But really, I do like the gray you currently have up.

You're gonna have to go with what you like. Everyone has their own taste and own idea of the look they want. If you want monochromatic the gray on the left matches the wall color. If you want some color bring in gray green as suggested in previous comment.

IMO your room, the two-tone in white and gray looks great with the gold accents. Very sophisticated. Continue that theme. Pale gold drapes. On my screen the ones on the right have an unpleasant pinkish hue. I see no reason to paint the coffee table.

As an aside, the sofa and coffee table arrangement is too tight and the coffee table accessories look cluttered somehow. Maybe keep the fleur-de-lis and canister and pair them with something larger for a set of 3? Play with it. Put the other items underneath.

The walls are def a greyish green, no blue. The Taupe curtains are more grey at night, but when sun comes out - yes they can look pinkish! Thank you for your insight! I also thought the coffee table looked squished.

Okay now I see the green. Skip gold tone or cream/ivory or any yellow undertone. With the sunlight, left of the fireplace in the 1st photo is a very nice rich gray and the right of the FP is a pale beige because the warm wood is reflecting light all the way to the ceiling, look at the crown molding. In the 2nd photo the taupe is not rich. Go with that gray. I like the Intrigue.

@tracefloyd I love that Moss color. The taupe is gone, I have put up the grey. But even the grey starts to look a little washed out, not as rich with all that sun coming in the afternoon, on the right side of the fireplace. I got these panels for $30 each - so when I say on a budget, lol I mean it. But that Moss would also go perfect!

grey or moss green drapes. Observation - I can’t see the whole space, but have you considered putting sofas perpendicular to each other with one facing the fireplace? Still conversational, but allows more room to move around coffee table and fills the space of the room better.

Velvet is tricky in the sunlight if you want a dark rich look for the same reason you mentioned. They catch and reflect the light no matter how dark the fabric. Nice though if that is effect you want.

If budget is driving your decision, you can’t beat $30/panel. I’d recommend that you get drapes lined, since there is strong afternoon sun and in no time they will be faded. Lining also makes drapes hang better and feel more substantial (especially since you wanted velvet).

Is the rug staying?

The rug is not staying. These sofas are large (Deep) , this is the only furniture arrangement I am able to do. Attaching a few more photos. I can get these curtains in about 40 colors and they are lined. There are couple different green options (one is more of a teal and the other forest green). I put up the grey velvet curtains, its still feels off. Maybe putting down a neutral area rug with grey in it - will help pull it together?

Since drapes come in 40 colors, I’d buy the rug first. Also before deciding on rug (size especially), have you tried the layout below? It takes advantage of the large room vs all cramed together. (Ignore piano.)

After rug is chosen, select drapes and a warm cream would be simple, light and elegant. Add lovely velvet cushions.

When decorating it’s important to consider the entire space/coordination vs choosing something in isolation.

@Maureen Okay I just rearranged the furniture, I was open to trying it. I am not sure if I like it?, maybe it has to grow on me. The sofa is very close to the fireplace (19 inches from surround)), and I have to remove the cabinet from the room as there is 2 feet between cabinet and sofa. If I remove the cabinet then I am 3 feet away from wall.

We were blessed to find this beautiful farm with a 5800 sq ft home. (We moved from a 2200 sq ft home) so there is so much needed to fill the space. I am trying to just make something work for now, as we continue to collect more, to fill all the space. I appreciate all the advice - gives me something to think about.

You need more space between the sofas and the coffee table…room for an average person to move through the space to sit down. Once you have spaced the furniture properly for easy movement, measure for your new area rug. I like to have the front feet of both sofas placed ON the rug, so measure about 10-12” under the sofas when deciding on the rug size.

Since you have lots of color options with the drapes, I would focus on the rug first. It will be your centerpiece for pattern/color while drapes are really just background. Rug should be at least 2 feet wider than your widest sofa and slip under the front 1/3 - 1/2 of both sofas, yet come no more than 12" from the hearth. I think that might require going back to your previous arrangement. Sofas should be 12-18" from the coffee table, so with some painter's tape you can test drive these few measurements to see how the whole picture will fit together. I hope you have some great art to hang in the room. It should be quite lovely it you take your time to get it right. .

Your house if beautiful and definitely my style. That said, I would focus on the rug. These are all from Crate & Barrel, only because I like their visualizer and selection.

Another inexpensive option for drapes is JCPenny. I love the idea of velvet drapes in that room. Congratulations on your new farm!

The house size might be a bit overwhelming at first but please don’t rush to fill it too soon! Live in the space for a while. Is there a privacy issue in the living room? I ask because waiting to find the right rug will dictate the right drapery color.

If this were my home, I would go with an ivory shag rug and black velvet curtains OR natural linen curtains for this room.
