What kind of overhead light fixture in formal living room?
Comments (10)If I were building there would definitely be an overhead (not recessed) in every room! I love having an overhead on a dimmer in every room to add additional lighting to the table and floor lamps, and also for convenience when cleaning or just running in and out for something, but it also adds another decorative element to the room. Our LR doesn't have an overhead fixture - you can see where it was removed and the ceiling patched - and I think the room looks "unfinished" without it. It seems like an awful lot of empty space up there! We may have to take down the LR ceiling to do some structural work and if we do we're going to take that opportunity to put in the wiring for an overhead fixture. I would love to find a beautiful antique chandelier, but Rejuvenations has a couple I really like too. I don't think a chandelier looks odd in a LR at all as long as you pick the right one. I don't know if this is the case in your situation, but it is also pretty common for a central overhead box to be installed during construction even when there is no current plan for a fixture there, because it's such a stinker to do so later. The opening for the box could be covered by a nice ceiling medallion....See MoreWhat color paint? Pic of dining room, foyer, formal living room
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! We are installing hardwood throughout the entire downstairs. The revere pewter is actually through french doors off of both rooms but you can't really see itwell from either room so I am not so worried about that going with the other rooms as much. It is mainly this view I want to flow well. I considered van cortland blue for the formal living room but it might be too dark/bold for me. I tend to be more neutral/conservative when decorating. And yes I love the yarmouth blue but don't think I want it everywhere. It looks perfect in the dining room....See MoreCurtains for (formal) Dining Room with colorful Persian Rug
Comments (41)sergeantcuff, eastautumn, and ingrid, I love all of your rooms. Persian rugs make a room, IMO. Since my budget is very limited I decorate around the most commonly found colors in them-- the more unusual colors are out of my reach. Thankfully, I am a huge fan of red anyway. My rugs in my LR (I needed 2 since it's a long, narrow room) and DR are all old and at least slightly worn. I'd love to know what the rugs have seen over all these years in their different homes. sergeantcuff, I think I would only change the lace if you don't feel they are "you" or you are simply tired of them. If you are looking for custom, consider https://bestfabricstore.com/ I bought some nice linen fabric from them and wish I had had used the workroom too... but I am doing it myself to save money. (Now I just need a huge chunk of uninterrupted time.) The prices are very reasonable, even lined, for basic curtains. eastautumn, your stained trim is so pretty. My home also has (dark) stained trim but it's not "beefy" so I don't like it at all. It provides just enough color to be annoying to work with without adding any real value... but it would be a pain to get rid of....See MoreHelp! What rug to go with this formal living room?
Comments (13)lorraine, I like the Samira shag rug. I think it has the right colors and the right "glam" feel for your room. Other possibilities from Wayfair, like the Samira -- I quite like the first one, and it has navy, ivory, and gray, and is wool, which will wear very well, https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/langley-street-kimberly-novia-ivorynavy-blue-area-rug-lgly5753.html Also, https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/brayden-studio-sewell-moroccan-ivory-area-rug-brsd7942.html https://www.wayfair.com/rugs/pdp/mercury-row-bostrom-modern-moroccan-trellis-ivory-area-rug-mcrw4237.html...See MoreAnnie Klassen
