Ideas for a living room setup? and window treatment?

My parents are building their dream house, but unfortunately none of us have good design sense. They bought a blue-gray couch which I absolutely hate and am wondering if there are any ideas on what other furniture pieces can go with it to make the space look cohesive?
Also, the windows are too low acc to me, I wad thinking of hanging sheer curtains for both about 8 inches above the window. Do you think that would look good?

Pull the couch away from the wall closer to the TV . Depending on amount of space and need, you could create walkway or add a narrow table behind the couch. I would also add a rug that contains the color of the sofa. Maybe I’m not seeing the windows clearly but they seem to have an attractive trim. I wouldn’t cover them up.

@Lisa ooh the walkway is a nice idea. This house tends to get really hot during the summer so I would definitely need some sort of window treatment to filter light and for privacy.

If I had shades like the ones from handwerk in that off white color would I get the stencil? and put a stencil on the curtains? I think stencil on both would be too much. Plain shade and stencil curtains or stencil shade and plain curtains? The other issue is color. If the shade is an off white color what would the curtains be? I don't think it's in this thread but one of my favorite places, Roycroft inn has black shades and then curtains with a leaf pattern. Looks really cool but I can't find a photo. The photo I took doesn't show the blackness of the shade. Off white shade with black curtains? Annette I just reread your post. So plain shade and then stencil the curtains? My concern would be they would both be off white (except for the stencil part). How would that go together? Trying to find a photo showing a shade and curtains together.

IMO the darker drape does not work with the sofa. As for snarkey I will say that to have blinds to keep out the sun is the worst choice I like to be able to see out of my windows so I choose solar shades to control light and heat they also give you day time privacy and then I add drapes for nightime privacy . As for what to se for drapes I would need to see the whole space and no matter what you choose make sure they are the proper length

I have a huge slider in the back of my condo. I have a sheer for privacy, curtains, and valance. I'm very happy with it. JCPenney did the valance and someone else did the curtains. First picture is with the sheers closed and second is with the sheers open.

No do not hang curtains 8" above the windows. Hang them at the top of the window frame or at the ceiling.

I’ll happily be proven wrong but I don’t think curtains fit the room’s style. I would go with a motorized window blind. Motorized because I think you will raising and lowering daily. I’d say wood shutters but the windows appear to have a decorative design along with trim. I’d show them off! Looks like you have pretty views as well. Moving the sofa closer connects it to the tv area. My living room is set up in a somewhat similar way. Im going to try to post a pic.

I agree with Lisa, float the couch and get a rug and go from there. I would NEVER put anything on your window, they add a nice look to the room. Do get the rug and some interesting pillows. I always put one big piece of art on the wall (my art) and then take a color from the art and try to find a rug or pillow with the art on the wall.

If wall and ceiling paint is a blend with lamps [called cream/ white shade] -- might be nice behind sofa on a console-

Drapes sheer in white 3 inches from ceiling. Must cover the gray box on wall. Pull couch out 3 ft from wall.

If 'the style' in the house has pops of saturated color here and there - here are 2 bright pillow ideas.

Or the table, if there's a tipping of the balance toward the floor color, toward wood natural color -- this type? and emphasis on greens / plants-
