succulent into a pot…

Pros- I have this succulent I got from California and now in Miami… indoors. I am planting in a pot. Any suggestions? Pot size? Special care at the beginning so it roots successfully?

Just pot up in well draining mix, in a pot wih drainage hole(s). Don't overpot. Don't use rocks on the bottom! Don't water for few days - I start watering when roots start growing...same as rooting most succulents...

Here we go again, it seems like every few weeks somebody wants to grow different species together. In a nutshell: It will usually not work long-term, it definitely will not work unless you know your plants extremely well and even then it is not a good idea. Roots become tangled, plants grow at different rates, plants need different amounts of water, food, etc. To overcome these pitfalls: Plant each individual in its own plastic pot, then place all the pots together into a larger container and fill in the spaces with gravel so that it looks natural. This way each plant can get individual attention without over or underwatering the others. It is still a tricky thing to do right, all the plants need to tolerate the same light levels and temperatures. If one outgrows the other the whole planting can easily be adjusted.

Don't know if this question is still live, but anyone who has succulents may be able to share a cutting or two. They propagate so easily (most of them) that you could have so many "starts", if they have a lot going. They may let you clean up their floor even. The way the succulents are, I can snip and pinch pieces and put them in a shoe box, come back weeks later and lay them on some sandy soil. Sprouts appear! These are some pinches I grabbed after it started frosting here (Ohio) and they are thriving in a little glass tea-light holder thing with a pinch of soil and aquarium gravel. I think these are the ghost plant, graptopetalum paraguayense.

You are thinking right - not a good environment for succulent. No drainage, sand (even less drainage), deep into a recurved bowl that creates more humidity...good for short time (like giving out wedding favors) but not for long life of succulent. Looks quite good, so repot soon to continue with nice new growth. Gritty mix in container with drainage holes, do not pot too low/deep inside the pot. Likes lots of light that it was probably in - has that kind of coloring. Crassula ovata Gollum or Skinny fingers...

I too get that the pebbles are to raise the inner pot higher in the cache pot. But I think it's still likely those pebbles will catch the overflow when watering & make a problem. If the inner potted plant were removed before watering & allowed to drain elsewhere, I think that'd be OK. I do that myself sometimes, prop the plant up in its pot inside another pot. I use the plastic inner ring from a package of scotch tape. Finish the tape & keep the plastic ring. I even have a trio of those rings holding up a terra cotta pot of Sans in a saucer, so that I can feel free to water to overflow, yet the plant is well above the water. Works well.

It wouldn't hurt to trim a couple of rows of leaves off the bottom of the rosette (cut as close to the trunk as possible) and allow the stubs to dry a bit before sticking it in soil, or stick it right away and don't water for a week or so. The lowest leaves should be just above the soil line - not sitting on the soil. Trimming bottom leaves makes for a longer stem and eventually more roots. The result will be a more robust plant in much less time. Many people practice this trick when planting peppers and tomatoes. I use it whenever I repot a succulent that has rosettes.
