Live Oak Fungus?
Comments (7)What about this one - also possibly Phellinus linteus (Black Hoof Medicinal Mushroom)?Looks like a hit, but are there any other analogues to be aware of? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Natural Sang Hwang has long been recognized as said in the old documents “If you can find a thousand years old lingzhi on an old Mulberry tree, you can save a dying person”. Only natural ones are genuine Phellinus linteus.” Phellinus linteus grows naturally in trunks of willow, paper mulberry and elm tree that is more than 100 years old, and shall grow for minimum 30 to 40 years to make a fruit body being used for medical application. In addition, the growth conditions such as humidity, temperature and lighting are very delicate, so that Phellinus linteus is very rare in the nature. That is the reason why, it is almost impossible to collect and take a fruit body in the nature. In the tradition Chinese medicine, Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) was classified as Lingzhi or Reishi. Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) is the most highly rated herb category in terms of multiple benefit and absence of side effects. Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) ranked number one of the superior medicines, is the most exalted medicine in ancient times and has been used for perpetual youth and longevity. All observations show that Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) has no side effects and can be consumed in high dosages and in parallel with other medications. Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) has been revered as herbal medicines for thousands of years in China and Japan. Emperors of the great Chinese Dynasties and Japanese royalty drank tea and concoction of the Sang Hwang (Phellinus linteus) for vitality and long life. It positively affected the life energy or qi of the heart, repairing the chest area and benefiting those with a knotted and right chest. He wrote that it also increased intellectual capacity and banished forgetfulness. Taken over a long period of time, ability of the body would not cease and the years would be lengthened to those of the immortal fairies. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So if this is a mushroom found rarely even in Asia, then how did it end up in the American wild? Or is there an American variety, too?...See MoreFungus on Live Oak stump

Comments (7)luisranza, Yep, fungus gnats are extremely annoying. As shelbyguy said, lower the humidity. You are probably keeping the soil too moist. I inevitably do it to myself each season. I use three relatively easy methods to control / eliminate them. 1) Let the soil dry out (not enough to kill the plants though!). When the top quarter inch or so is dry, rough up the soil to disturb any eggs. 2) Set a shallow bowl of cider vinegar covered with saran wrap by the plants. Cut a hole in the center of wrap just large enough to let them get in. TheyÂre stupid to figure their way out and die. 3) I use a type of fly tape in the plant trays (photos below). Not sure if you can find them on your area but they do a great job of reducing the population. In addition, they allow you to monitor what flying pests are growing. Just check the stuck bugs to identify what they are. Good luck, Bill...See MoreNats!
Comments (8)I've never had these gnats before this year. I have K+Neem by Organica, sprayed it on the soil yesterday and am waiting to see what happens. It does seem much better today. It is an insecticide and fungicide. Im also wondering if it's the ST. It's also the first year I've tried it and seems to be too much of a coincidence that these gnats started when I started using the ST when watering. Hmmmm. The ST bottle gets "crusty" just as my soil seems to be on the tops. Maybe this calls for an experiment!! Just a thought--wondering how many have these fungus gnats AND use ST!?!...See Moreseasiderooftop
