HELP: A greenhouse in So. Florida... basically to block rain?
Comments (1)Hi IMO the rain is far more beneficial than harmful depending on what type of orchids you're growing of course. INE anything that blocks the rain will also block the circulation of air and you definitely don't want that in florida lol. Lighten up on your media ,I grow mostly epiphytes either in pots with lava rock or mounted to wood slabs or limbs. I've tried many types of covering over the years and as you can guess excessive heat is the main problem even in winter. I use two basic culture methods. A shadehouse with lattice and vines on the roof and growing attached to yard trees. One good way for a small collection is hanging baskets with a light media hanging in trees .This allows you to move them during cold spells. I usually get the best growth during the sunner rainy season but allow for extra drainage. gary...See MoreWho says you can't grow tomatoes in the ground in Florida?
Comments (19)I have some is the ground and some in pots and the ground ones usually do better, but most of them are volunteers, whatever was near there last year is coming up again, I just let the 'maters fall on the ground if I don't pick them and they set the seed the next year, on their own.. I'm a messy gardener...but I amend the soil heavily, compost and kitchen scraps and green clippings, leaves..etc. it all gets tossed out there, I have lots of earth worms and they love it...I think nematodes don't like a'rich' soil they like the sand...sally...See MoreMy Thoughts On Florida Jujube, So Far
Comments (7)Some of my Indian Jujube fruits are being damaged by stink bugs. I had to catch them with my hands and kill them...or throw them on the ground and step on them. I hate stink bugs....they tried to eat my sapodialla, mango, sugar apple, now indian jujube...they even eat my figs. I now need to research on how to kill stink bugs!!! Well, back to the Indian jujube. The fruit itself when mature is smooth on the outside. The inside is not dry like the Chinese Jujube. I find the IJ taste better...but only if it's sweet like the CJ. Sometime the IJ doesn't have that sweet taste...so the only way to know if I have the sweet variety or not is to wait until the fruits mature....See MoreSo. Whose S.Florida mango tree is flowering for Dec/Jan
Comments (34)Sweet JF. My Cushman and Maha is trying to push out something. The tissue color surrounding the buds is intensifying it yellow/orange color. In the case of the Maha, it's more pepto bismol pink/yellow. Pickering, Lancetilla and Dot is pushing flowers. I'm surprized by the size of Dot's flowers. On first sight they looked like young Hibiscus buds/flowers with the hollow tip. Huge!. The mature julie is still flowering with the first pannicle having 5-6 tiny fruit on it. The newer Julie is flowering. I'll post pics a bit later. Carrie, Mallika, and Okrung dormant....See Morepetalique
