Vinyl Planks for residential installation

We're installing about 2000 sq ft. of LVP in our home. I'm looking for some help on what a good thickness and wear layer be for residential use. We are a family of four living in Miami. 2 teenagers + wife and I. We also have a cat. Here are some questions that I would like some help with:

What thickness is above average? 5 to 6.5 MM?

What wear layer is above average? 12 mil vs 20 mil?

The floor is going to be installed over tile. Do I need any prep work before installing?

Do I need to install a humidity barrier?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

8MM or more would be above average. 5-6.5MM would be average for a rigid core product. Glue down LVP is about 3MM. Some LVP is 15MM thick.

Most LVP products come with a 20 mil wear layer now, so I would say that is average. 12 mil is sufficient for a residential setting but many people prefer a beefier 20 mil product. Most 12 mil LVP products and up come with a lifetime warranty.

It's hard to answer the prep work and moisture barrier questions without more information. Typically a skim coat to fill in grout lines is needed when installing over tile.

Thank you James! We're probably going to cough up a little bit more $$ and get something higher end. Probably around the 8mm , 20+ mil range.

All the flooring experts I have heard on this forum, plus a few contractors have said a definite "NO" to putting cabinets on top of a floor that floats - just as you are hearing from the flooring stores. This is a red flag about your contractor. I would check his references because this is pretty basic thing he should know. It is OK to install cabinets on top of tile and solid hardwood.
