Water Fleas and Small leeches, how do you get rid of them?
Comments (4)Hey there. I don't know what the temps are in your area. The cure doesn't always seem to work under 50oF according to the info I got. Water fleas are also called fish lice and can be a very serious problem for comets and koi. The leeches seem to be a gastronomic treat for the fishies though I would be willing to deny them this delicacy without a qualm but I don't see any site that recommends a particular treatment for the leeches. The medications I had the best luck with are Dimlin and Anchors Away. One of the aquarium stores here uses Clout. The usual information is for treating the fish and the pond water but it should work on the plants as well. Sandy...See MoreHave your painted cabinets chipped & how long have you had them?
Comments (1)My Plain & Fancy cabinets are 10 now. Factory spray painted. This Old House did a show on P&F focusing on the painted surface which seems to be especially durable. On the show they were installing white cabinets. Mine are a butter color. The only areas of wear is on the edge and knob of the garbage pull out and on the handle of the dishwasher -- I had purchased a handle from Lee Valley and sent it to them for spray painting. This is wear and it's the type people pay to get on painted furniture. No chipping whatsoever and no separation in the seams either. We are in upstate NY so we have similar temperature extremes as New England. No idea if P&F has changed their manufacturing in the last few years. There was a poster on here with a huge rant on them but I've been very happy with the quality. Kompy, who's a KD, did a gorgeous white kitchen a year or so ago with P&F. You might consult her as well if they interest you....See MoreIf you had to get rid of a sofa or a loveseat, which one?
Comments (9)You ask a timely question. I have the issue facing me. A loveseat and a sofa both of which are really like daybed style, since I don't like big arms and such on my furniture. They both have loose pillows, and a single bottom cushion/mattress. Here is the picture of the loveseat, now on my sunporch. From the back: From the front: The sofa is just about one person wider. Both can be free-standing, since the backs are ornamental. But I want to turn one of them with the back to the new entry, and the sofa might stick out so folks have to go around it. I have two new chairs (dining chairs) to use in the living room which would pair nicely opposite the love seat, or pushed together to make a longer armless white leather and stainless steel "bench." (Think Barcelona chair.) But, I'm also wondering if I can use the SOFA in the front bedroom which will become our study and library. I first though to have back to back (opposite walls) desks for our computers, but now I'm thinking to give MOST of the room to my DH, who is pouting because the Teahouse is ALL MINE. He is of an age now when he likes to take an afternoon nap, and I don't like the living room looking like a flop house when he comes in with his gardening clothes. I am also removing the TV from over the mantle, removing it from the living room. It will be a place to make conversation. Listen to music, which might be coming from the dining room. Yes, the large TV will be hung on the wall above a small buffet and this will be OPPOSITE the window seat. I will also be able to watch/listen from the kitchen. If space is a problem and you mean really GET RID of the sofa or loveseat, I'd keep the LOVESEAT, and get/build an ottoman to use as a coffee table, making that ottoman the same height and width of the loveseat, so it could be used like a sleeping chaise when pushed together, or as a separate seat when another person wishes to sit. We all have our different comfort zones, of how much personal space we need. And adjust for hearing ability or lack thereof. Like my DH is almost deaf at times, and a chair which can be drawn up close or at 90 degrees where he can lip read, that would be good. Also, furniture pushed against the wall with no "breathing" room adds an institutional feel to a home environment. Pull it out from the wall, and you make it more personal and cozier. If your wall areas feel empty, get some potted plants really big ones, or some tall lamps and wall pieces but be sure to leave breathing room so your furnishings will all be special. Oh yeah. Here I found a picture of the sofa while it was on the sunporch. I used that strip of African printed fabric to keep it looking fresh after we sat on it. For neatness, I'd go with the loveseat. And more flexible in arrangement options too....See MoreSide note to getting rid of bermuda-How do you get rid of Oxalis?
Comments (9)The common yellow oxalis we have here has tiny "bulbules" (sp?), which lurk 12 -18 inches under the ground. You can easily pull up the plants, of course, but those tiny bulb things stay under the soil, and up it comes again. I once had a gardener who decided to eradicate it from a flower bed which is about 12 feet long and 6 feet wide. He actually dug up the top 2 feet of soil, and sifted it by hand to get all of the tiny bulbs out. That worked for the first year, but by 2-3 years after he did that, back the oxalis came. So, being lazy, what I do is just admire it in the Spring, except where it is trying to smother other plants. Then just pull it out around those plants. By late Spring here it has died down, and I pretend it is gone. Of course, it comes up again the next Spring. It is one of our first blooming plants to bloom (starts Jan/Feb), so I just regard it as such and let it be mostly. One of my cats likes to eat it (we used to eat it as children - we called it "sour grass"). Jackie...See MoreBumblebeez SC Zone 7
