Design Dilemma Home Decorating home office

home office revamp

last year

Hi! Hate the current vibe and want something more cohesive. Help! For size purposes - the current rug is 5x7 and desk is 24x47. Please help with ideas for desk/rug/art or suggestions!
-all that needs to stay is the chair and plant
-Desk needs to have some storage and visually appealing from the back
-$500 max for desk but would love to stay under if possible

I like the 'toasty' color of your desk. The golden legs seem fine with medium greens, but not the blush/light colors of the rug... and it 'competes' with black legs....

Maybe the legs could be spray painted toasty neutral.

It includes Word, Powerpoint, Excel and something else I have never used, and forget what its call, it does not include Outlook. I just ordered MS Office Home Student for $124.99 free shipping form Amazon.com. Heck, and I just, with the help of friends on the web forums, managed to set Open Office as the default application for doc. ppt. and xls. I know my wife will be happy to have MS Office back on her machine, MS has really outdone itself (money mongers that they are) in making Office available for home use at a reasonable price, keeping in mind I can install it on both my and my wife's machine, plus another home machine, for the $125 price tag.

What is in that other room with door? Not sure it would be good to have obstacle (ie tv credenza) blocking the path. Also your view into the room through archway will be this big thing sitting there. I think I like Cara s #`1 option .... except put a second chair where tv is and move tv to the long wall... perhaps installing a built in of some sort on that wall. Would be cozy, sure, but if this is a room where you are together a lot watching tv/movies then just let it be a dedicated viewing space. Re mounting heavy items to the wall - it can be done on old plaster walls but youd have to be able to drill into the studs to attach some sort of mounting bracket. Drilling generally doesnt dislodge plaster - unlike pounding nails - unless it is super loose or fragile. Looks like a nice old house from what I can see!

If you decide you aren’t going to have the desk against a wall, put a floor outlet in now so that you don’t have cables running across the floor. I did a floor plan with my desk and rug then figured out where I would need sockets.

I'm going to join in on the "warming" trend. Do you actually work from home? There is a difference from actually WORKING and working. If your work depends on it, then the room needs to be productive and comfortable. If it's not a full time job, then you have more options based on your preferences. It looks like a nice sized space. If you are going to be doing Zoom meetings or anything where the wall behind you is in view, consider the color and decor for THAT wall to be especially important. Maybe a focal color as a good backdrop to shelves, artwork, or credentials. Where did you get the sofa? I really like it and it looks to be about the right size and color for MY home office, lol so anything you can tell me about it would be appreciated!

Can you show entire room from further back. Are you open to changing the configuration of desk and if storage was added, you could keep it (spray legs black) and then spend the $500 on accessorizing, including a great ceiling light and art. Have a plan for room before purchasing anything.

It’s a flex space and the rest of the room is taken (working in a meditation corner - not done yet by any means). I really really love this office layout though and have tried basically everything else and this is the one that feels right:)

Looks like it’s the only set up possible and I wouldn't get a heavy feeling desk and keep it small. Perhaps move rug and desk up a bit and add a low bookcase on the back wall. I think room may feel better balanced and you get storage, as well as an extra surface for a printer, etc.

I notice your wall hanging, so maybe this color? If you count reviews to mean much, this has good ones.

Noticed your comment about adding a meditation corner. If that’s your front door in picture, I think it‘s really important that the entire space feels connected. Consider the size/placement of rug; including meditation area to connect the space. Decide how you want room to feel as a whole and if you like Japandi, it could be a great choice; simple, calming and your chair will work.

Love the thoughtfulness! That’s actually the inspiration pic we’re going off of for the medi corner :). I Love the neutral tones as well - definitely fits the vibe I’m going for. This space is a lofted area at the top of the staircase and the door leads to our roof!
