Entry Door Locksets: What is Smartkeys

Hi,

We are getting a black door and would like a lockset like Kwikset Montara that looks like the photo.

It is two keys, deadbolt and knob. No one here wants the keypads, because I avoid anything "smart" that can potentially lock me out of my own house.

In the store, the package said Grade 1 certified, but online it says Grade 2. It also shows how you can rekey the lock yourself and use Smartkey technology.

I don't understand what this means. Can anyone rekey this lock?

The Kwikset Smartkey is not electronic or connected or related to any other thing in any way. The locksets use the same spring-activated pins that are in any keyed cylinder. However, with their "Smartkey," there is an additional little hole that a tool can be inserted to allow you to change to a different key at any time of your choosing, DIY, in about 15 seconds. This avoids taking the cylinder to a locksmith and having the pins sized for a different key.

In order to perform this process though, you need the original key. So that is the built-in safety.

There should be videos on how it works, and there will be many videos on how this is a less-secure system as well. Any lockset can be manipulated at any time though.

IIRC Kwikset was first to market, and may have patents pending. Schlage came out with their own line, and Kwikset sued so Schlage doesn't offer the same system anymore.

If you don't have a need to ever change your keys, then no need for this system. I don't know if Kwikset offers locksets without it. The advantage is if you have 6 different locksets on your house, you can rekey them all to 1 key for the house.

I had the Kwikset (Kevo) in my old house and I hated that thing. Of course the technology was from 2018 when I installed it so it could be much better. You had to have the app on your phone and for it to always be running (it loved to log us all out) and then you touch your finger to the lock. It runs on your Wi-Fi so if it was out you’re out of luck. More trouble than it was “cool” in my opinion. I didn’t like the keypads either which is why I chose this.

Hmm, good info but I am still undecided! The door will be a new SLAB, 1.75" douglas fir. It's going into an existing frame, so we thought to order it slab-only (undrilled/unmortised) so we could make sure the lock parts fit together right with the frame. Sounds like it's definitely more difficult for the average DIY-er to install a mortise set, which we'd thought. I think we're leaning towards the tubular, for ease of install and cost, but this is a fairly high-end reno and I wasn't sure it would seem too cheap to use tubular (Or if anyon would ever notice!)

My house has 5 Gatehouse locks , the kind with the big drooping handle on the outside, the lever handle inside and the one key hole . Pushing the thumb whatever you call it down on the inside will open the bolt , or you can turn the "whatever you call it" to open the door lock . So I bought them on clearance at Lowes , maybe ten years ago , and there are two or three different keys for the 5 locks . If I buy the Schlage rekey kit from Lowes , will that work to rekey these locks ?. I am determined to do this myself , not take them to a lock smith .

The standard backset distances are 2 3/8 and 2 3/4. and have been since long before 1989. That is the distance from the center of the hole to the door edge. Exterior door hardware is almost always 2 3/4 setback. There is however no standard distance between the hole for the latch and the hole for the deadbolt. I have some that are 3 5/8 and 5 1/2 both from emtek. other manufacturers will be different. The hole for the lock and latch are generaly 2 1/8" dia. Sometimes a deadbolt hole is as small as 1 3/4" Small holes can always be drilled larger. If you can't find a handle set that matches the center distance of your drilled holes, There are many sets available that have the deadbolt completely separate from the handle, and can be installed at any distance. A lot of times the phrase "they don't make that any more" means "Home Depot doesn't sell that type and I'm to lazy/stupid to look on the internet". If you don't want your house to look exactly like your neighbor's, you have to shop on the web.

There is no national residential consensus code in the US that requires a fire rating for the separation wall between a house and a garage nor is an opening in such a wall required to be fire-rated or a "fire door". Such assemblies are required by building codes between different Occupancies and that is not the case for single-family dwellings. Instead, US residential building codes provide written prescriptive requirements for that separation wall and openings in it. Many jurisdictions modify the closer requirements but none to my knowledge requires the wall or door to be fire-rated. Also there would be little purpose in requiring a fire-rated door in an unrated wall assembly. I don't know of any of this applies to the OP.
