garage door rough opening issues

i am installing a 9x7 garage door. my rough opening is 9'3"x7'1-1/2". I understand the goal post concept but how do i close up the rough opening? do i just trim everything out with 1x6 ? which would bring my opening size to 9'1-1/2"x7'0-3/4..do i just leave a 3/4 air gap all the way around the door to get to my actual door size of 9'x7'?

You have the right opening side 3" wider and 1-1/2" high, the sides and header are 2x lumber (not 1x), and the weather strip molding on top and each side will close the gap.

Thanks for the info,I now see what happens.the door sits behind the opening not in the actual opening itself.thats why the door and opening can be the exact same size.the weatherstrip attaches to the front edge of the door.

The adjustment for this is on the side of the unit. Use a small screwdriver and turn the 'down limit' in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover.

Are you sure the chain is in the correct position? Remove the chain from the pulley and run the opener. You will need to watch the pulley as the opener runs. When the pulley turns counterclockwise and stops, move the door to the open position and then put the chain back on the pulley and tighten. Now try it.

If your wall control has three buttons the 'lock' function has probably been turned on. Press and hold the 'lock' button for about 3 seconds and release. This will turn that function off and your remotes will work again.

The weatherstripping would typically attach to the inside edge of the RO and make contact with the door face.

Garage door rough openings are typically set in exact 1.5" increments larger than the size of the (actual) door to allow a 2x wood frame. In most all cases this wood frame is needed to extend past the concrete foundation stem wall at the bottom of the door so the finish jamb material has something to attach to.

This 2x frame can then be sheathed in prefab metal covers made just for this; then you add the weatherstrip molding on top of that. Optionally you can also add wood/vinyl/PVC jambs and heads on top of this frame, sometimes brickmold depending on the 1.5" increment the rough opening size was set back from the 9' width.

You will also need a wood buck on the inside face of wall to attach your track mounts to. Some other things too, if you are unaware you might want to do an image search on google.
