Anyone have a farmhouse sink and soapstone?
Comments (18)Sparkling, I suspect it's easier to replace a non-undermounted sink, since you can lift it out rather than having to undo some cabinetry and cut/slide it out. But it depends on how it's built in to the cabinet, I believe. Caveat: the Donsjo is so easy to use as an overmount because you just need two straight edges of counter on each side; note that you'd have to find a similar model sink for replacement, and not just any drop-in topmount. Most require a square/oval cutout. Also note that undermounting it would make it a farther reach to the bottom. Up to you whether that's good or bad. I will say that this is a more crucial consideration than I'd realized, and because we didn't like the depth of our last farm sink when undermounted - it was 9" deep + 2" of counter, simply too deep to be comfortable) we are now looking for a shallower version for the new kitchen....See MoreDoes anyone have a soapstone sink?
Comments (14)Thank you -- Thank you -- Thank you!!!! I think we've actually made a decision about SOMETHING! The windows and door will be installed sometime this week (hopefully)and then we'll be able to nail down the final layout and actually get started. Reading horror stories from others is a bit daunting, but I know all the people working on the project personally, so hopefully that will help. Hard to escape an irate customer in our little community! Trailrunner -- I'll be sure to send your regards if we go with anything from NE Salvage. They're not too far (5 hrs one way) for a road trip. Springtime here in Maine is less than inspiring, so a trip "out" would be good for my mental health! remodelfla -- the counters I saw yesterday reminded me of your gorgeous ones (only not quite as nice...) I ran my hand over them and thought of you! Thanks to everyone for the links (loved Sabajimata's and carecook's kitchens). Funny how I've looked at them before but because I wasn't considering a soapstone sink, I didn't notice the them. DS and I went for a walk down on the shore this morning. We had fun imagining what life will be like in our new place this time next year....can hardly wait!...See MoreAnyone with a soapstone prep sink?
Comments (2)Hi- I have a 36" Shaws sink, with soapstone counters AND a soapstone prep sink on my island. I really like the prep sink because it kind of disappears into the island. I have had a stainless sink in all of my previous kitchens and I hated all of them too....See MoreHow are carved soapstone sinks made??
Comments (4)Francy, they do take a big block of stone and core a bunch of holes in it, then finish up by grinding it clean. That is the way you would hand make a sink. There is a little more to it but you get the idea. If your lucky enough you would have a huge cnc machine like Bucks County Soapstone has and could program any sink you wanted and the cnc would cut it with all diamond tools. . . They just got this machine up and running from what I hear and I can't wait to see the sinks they will be producing. . . They will be leading the soapstone sink industry with what they can create. The old sinks are what the industry calls a slab sink. Which means they are 5 pieces put together. The old sinks are just square pieces glued together, but now we tounge and groove them with the bottoms ground down 5/8 of an inch so the water doesn't sit in the bottom. The harder varieties are usually notched not tounge and grooved. Block sinks are made in Brazil and shipped in. As far as I know BCS will be the only company producing them here in the states....See Moregardengrl66 z5
