Fixing dowdy decorating

A E
last year

How does one incorporate old/vintage/family things into home decor without it looking dowdy? Aside from the obvious painting of walls needing to be done, I have paintings my grandmother painted and other items from her that I like, but can't seem to make them work without it looking like I've never updated my home. Does one corral them? Do I chuck them? It's a love/hate relationship with them. They're nature related, which is up my alley, but they have yellowed some. How do you incorporate these items in a way that your house doesn't look like it's from a bygone era? What's the rule of thumb here? I despise trendy, but geez, dowdy isn't working.
