Builder put an 8" duct vent instead of 10" in outdoor kitchen

We have a lanai with a large covered area. We have a 48" grill and want to put a hood over it.

Our builder said the trusses only allowed him to put in an 8" vent but we need 10" Is there a solution

1. Pretty impossible to give structural advice without more info. Would need photos and/or drawing of existing framing.

2. Why do you think you need a 10" diameter duct?

Because that is what is needed for the hood to have enough cfm

@ 3labs - I have a similar system & setup as yours: my XR16 which is now called your XR17 & a TAM8 vs. your TAM7. Ryan helped me figured out that my Comfort-R ramp profiles & overcooling to dehumidify was NOT set-up. So Iam very interested how you do this - as my experience is that after they install the system - it's hard to get them to acknowledge anything. So you will have it in writing vs. my install as part of a builder process sight unseen. My only advice is to have them come out & go over everything on your list & train you on how to use the thermostat the way you want it. I didn't get either & am only now learning from strangers like Tiger & Ryan. Good luck & please update us!

A guy I knew in high school - a normal, honor roll, good kid - said he went to Woodstock with his older brother. I'm pretty sure he was telling the truth. Woodstock was 1969, so this guy had to have been about 14. My DS is now 14. I have to ask myself two(rhetorical)questions: how cool is it that he was at Woodstock, and what were his parents thinking? Although melaska and linelle seeing the Beatles, that may beat out even Woodstock! And less muddy. Oh, and DS explained to me that Jethro Tull isn't "hard rock" it's "classic rock." I explained to her that they weren't "classic" yet when I saw them. Reminded me of the line from the hilarious song "1985," "When did Moltey Crue become classic rock?" which segue allows me to go sort of back on topic. She was gonna get some marble, Backsplash of subway tile, She was gonna put in drawers, Pull outs with lots of style. Her UCL LED Is just a fantasy She looks at her fluorescent lights And nothing is all right It's still Coil stove, tile counters and over-the-range Microwave, Oak cabinets, partial overlay And double sink with separate spray. First, a home inspector will not have the capacity for complicated electrical situations. Second, your last post, starting with "Center11" 3700WAmp" is off. The word amp, and all further suffixes need to move down 1. NOTE; This permissive code "exception" is something I will never use, but some electricians use it like a get out of jail free card :-/ To do the calculations, you need to know the KW rating of each appliance at 240 volts. (Not 208V) "Rating at 240V=40amps" is the allowable circuit rating if ONLY the cooktop is on the circuit. (Not the max unit rating, unless there are electronics limiting the total) We need the total KW rating, which presumably would be 13.7KW @ 240 Volts, but not sure from what you wrote. It should be on the nameplate. The oven is apparently 9KW @ 240 Volts. Here is the code. Here should be a fair explanation. I think it is too tight for you to have an island and cabinets/pantry on all walls. That appears to be 3ft in the last drawing around the island and makes it oddly shaped. A 2ft reach in pantry will handle pots/appliances etc. and protrude less and waste less space as it doesn't need the space to step as a step-in pantry does. I have no issues with having a sink on the island. It can be really helpful when you have multiple helpers or have someone doing dishes while another cooks, but you need space around it and having it on a short narrow area means you'll likely have water running down the back and splashing onto the floor there unless very careful every time.

Run the larger diameter duct where you can and transition to a smaller duct where necessary due to framing constraints.

Maybe post pics but usually not a good idea to go down smaller than the instructions say. Is there no way to vent out a side wall this is why we need pictures

If the outdoor kitchen is located under a covered porch a vent hood is a good idea for fire safety (if you cook like me) and for occupant comfort--at least for non-smokers.

With respect to the size of exhaust duct work, what matters is the total pressure losses vs. the fan's performance curve. A transition from a 10" diameter to an 8" diameter and back to 10" diameter is a perfectly reasonable solution to a framing constraint. A mechanical contractor worth his/her salt should be able to calculate an equivalent length and compare it to the manufacturer's recommendations.

You could probably transition to an equivalent oblong that was 8 in the narrower dimension, couldn't you?
