cleaning hard wood floors
Comments (5)You need to determine if your wood floors are wood and you need to clean the wood, or if they are polyurethane coated and you just need to clean the poly coating. My Martha Stewart Homekeeping handbook says: Poly coated flooring: Dry sweep for daily maintenance. When needed, use mild cleaning agent mixed per manufacturers instructions. She says vinegar mix is 1/4 cup white vinegar to 1 quart water. For waxed wood floors, Martha's book says (paraphrased): Apply paste wax with 0000 steel wool or cotton cloth. Smooth a thin coating on...or apply liquid wax using wax applicator (lambswool head). When wax starts to dry/harden, buff with rotary buffer to a shine. Buff monthly to revive shine. When buffing fails, re-wax where needed. There's a lot more info on waxed wood, but that was the basic info based on your Q. ************************** I've only had personal experience with poly-coated wood floors, and I agree with previous poster & Martha on that. I always took about 1 quart water with about 1/2 teaspoon dish soap. Wring out your damp cloth VERY well. Don't let water bead up. Spot clean tougher areas on hands & knees. Never had waxed wood. Just relaying that info because I just happened to have the Martha book in reaching distance & looked it up. Gayle...See MoreHow do I keep tile floor clean?
Comments (27)I started to have tiles in my kitchen, then in my sunroom and will soon have my bathroom with tiles. Like trulyblessedmum, I could not for a while have the tiles completely clean, no matter how many times I rinsed the mop. They were not shining as they should, and yes, if you walked on them wearing socks, the socks would get dirty. But then I started to use Oxy Clean, a very versatile stain cleaner product (it is great to get stains off your clothes, even blood stains). I dissolve one and half or two measurefuls in four litres of hot water, wet the floor with it with a mop and leave it to work for 10 minutes. I then mop up the liquid (don't even need to scrub) and dry the floor with an old terry towel. The floor sparkles and any stains on the tiles or the grout are gone. The grout looks darker but reverts to its original colour when completely dry. Suzanne...See MoreDid we make a mistake with our wire-brushed flooring???
Comments (1)We have light wire brushed floors with a hard wax oil finish. Have had no issues, food spills cleans up easily. Some instances, where sauce is embedded into the grooves. Some scrubbing was done with a plastic nylon brush. If, you have kids, you can forget about paint and nail polish....See MoreOpinion Brushed hardwoord floor? easy to clean?
Comments (7)The wire brushed floor is better at hiding scratches and wear but if not cleaned properly it can accumulate soil in the grain. This would be more of an issue with light/white floors but not so much with the color you're looking at. IMO, wire brushed flooring looks more like real wood where the smooth wood can have a fake look. It matters where you're using the floor, how much traffic you have, and the nature of what might end up on the floor. If you're fussy (cleaning often), don't have dogs and aren't using this in a kitchen, there's zero reasons to get the smooth floor, especially since you like the wire brushed floor better....See Morekempek01
