Kitchen Backsplash Dilemma
Hello,
I am purchasing a new construction home and would appreciate help with backsplash.
I plan to have white cabinets with polished nickel hardware, a stainless steel hood, an island that is similar in color to the picture and white floating shelves.
I have pictured the model unit of my new kitchen.
Floors are dark hard wood similar to the photo.
Counters are Calacatta Independence (Dahl tile)
I plan to have my backsplash go to the ceiling as in the picture.
I like the chevron pattern but worry it might be too busy taken to the ceiling.
Both backsplashes are glass with a mother of pearl iridescence.

Comments (13)Really love your tiles. I like the idea of the slate, but have you checked to see if the tile maker makes border tiles? What color are your cabinets going to be? Another thought, what kind of range is it? If it's gas, I would think that wood would be out because of the combustibility issue. I know it would not be to code here. Comments (4)they sound interesting enough to me, being crackled and having variation. larger size might work..what size you consider? Gray is already considered dated lol. Makes no sense to me personally as all this dated thing is a new concept I'm still struggling with-how a color can be dated? but in terms of what happens in trends etc-it's on its way out, yes. they move into warmer tones. they're still into greiges for now to bridge between things a bit. white is becoming big as a neutral. wood stains are making a big comeback. this update on trends can go on and on but i'm sure you can find thousand threads here discussing it so i'll make it short. if you're really worried-it might be you're simply are not attached to a color enough. which is okay, really. then pick off-white. off white is pretty. Even very much so. I like both off whites and grays(I do have preference for much warmer grays though) so I have off whites and warm grays. And many other colors too since I love them too. I commit by choosing something of course,-but it's fine since commitment, paradoxically, is a road to freedom:) But I admit I was also worrying when choosing..well choosing everything except for stuff like toilets etc. Of course one worries, it's a hassle and an expense and you want to love it in the end. So. Try to worry less. If you can remove "dated" from the equation- great. Go with your heart's desire. If no-then ok, take it into equation and don't do gray. Worry less. Comments (7)Lol, yes, it’s a DiY job. The end wall tile goes there because the kitchen countertop extends all the way there and it just looked weird stopping it before the countertop. We didn’t want to leave the sink without backsplash. Did I mention it’s a DIY because the original contractor left with us without kitchen (and 12K) for three months? May just leave it without then. Comments (6)Near the sink, I'd tile the short wall in the corner as well, and the area behind the sink if you're adding a raised wall. For the stove area, I would tile to the bottom of the hood vent or the bottom of the shelves, depending on where those are placed. If you're not going all the way to the ceiling I would not go as high as the pantry. Do you have room to add a narrow cabinet to the left of the sink? Or even a 6" filler piece? last yearIf you can wait, then wait. Whites and greys are notoriously hard to get right when close to one another -- on my monitor, the counter looks warm but the tiles look cool. That is a tonal mis-match that is going to slap you in the face every time you walk into that kitchen. If you go with a plain subway in a color you're going to have a much easier time with it, and IMO will look better.
I'm all for taking tile up to the ceiling (I did it in my own kitchen), but with a chevron or diamond and all that tile that's going to be slap #2 in the eyes every morning -- it's overkill. If you're going to have that amount of tile, keep it a simple shape.
This pic is re-posted many times by many posters because it's so well done. The soft color breathes life into the space, and the simple shape keeps it from being visually overwhelming:
