My new approach to appliance care is to call whenever there is a question especially if it is under warranty. If you can reproduce the sound for the repairman that makes it even easier. What if this is the initial rattle before the last gasp and you're left without a working dishwasher for a while? I'm having 2 GE Profile dishwashers installed next week to replace the 2 that were recalled. GE would fix them for free but the one at our vacation house is over 10 years old and the one at my home is 7 and doesn't always dry well. So they'll contribute $300 towards each new Profile. I'm glad you report that they are quiet.

According to the report in the Consumers Reports Magazine the average lifespan of a water heater is 12yrs. Code requires that whenever a water heater is installed over a floor or flooring materials that can be damaged by water the water heater must have an approved pan with a 3/4" drain line terminated into an approved "indirect waste receptor". The TPRV must also have a full bore line drain line which will drain by gravity flow to an approved indirect waste receptor. (The TPRV may not terminate into the pan). The preferred method of installing a water heater is to place it near an outside wall on the ground floor and both the Pan drain & TPRV drain lines are extended through the outside wall and terminate on the ground outside in a conspicuous place. The end of the drain lines must point downwards and there can be no fittings or threads on the end of the line. (The drains may not be concealed behind shrubbery.) Solid, liquid or gasseous fired water heaters may not be installed in a bathroom, bedroom or any room which opens directly into a bathroom or bedroom. In a situation where a water heater is installed in a basement and the house main drain exits the structure above the basement floor where a gravity flow floor drain cannot be achieved we remove the TPRV valve. For electric water heaters the opening is plugged and for gas water heaters we install a WATT's 210 gas cutoff valve. A Pressure relief valve is then installed at any convenient location on the first floor and it is discharged through the wall outdoors. Thanks for the feedback. I'm running it 12 hours a day now. So, if the 2.5 hours is accurate, I guess I am turning it over a little less than 5 times a day. It appears very clear and clean. No trees to worry about. Weather is certainly variable, so can't really consistently predict that. It is a Salt Pool with a 425 sq. ft. filter... Hayward Swim Clear. Just wondering if 10-12 should be a normal target for the summer, or if cutting that down some will (1) save a noticeable amount on electricity, and (2) cause any issues with the pool. Anyone else in favor of 24? Seems like a lot if I turn it over 10 times a day or so. But would be interested in additional feedback on that point. Thanks.

I think using roofing sealant is the way to go on the inside. For smaller pots I have used spray on 'gutter sealant', which is basically spray on plastic. Someone will probably get excited that theses could be toxic... etc. But if water drains from your roof into your garden then...anyway. I have stopped getting wine barrels because they really don't last very long and they stop looking nice long before that. Maybe if you got one of those plastic pond liners made to fit inside the barrel. You would still need to keep up with the finish every other year or so. If the barrel wood stays dry, it will shrink and lose the tight barrel look, and the bands may slip (so screw then on); barrels are made to be damp so the wood swells to a tight fit.
