Which rose as a last rose to plant?
Comments (10)Fragrance is so subjective. To me, SdlM is not really that fragrant, and it's more of a sweet/powdery scent than a damask/old rose fragrance. Most of the Portlands have that damask scent, as do many Hybrid Perpetuals and some of the Austins. In my garden, Eugene de Beuharnais has it the strongest - it will draw you to it from ten feet away. The Prince has that smell, too. So does Marbree, a mottled-blossomed Portland that Jeri recommended, that's clean as a whistle and reblooms reliably. (In its second season in my garden, it's a small, tidy plant.) Of course, performance is all about location. I'm in hot, dry Sacramento, so my experiences won't be anything like yours. Here, SdlM is temperamental. Powdery mildew, blossoms tend to ball (although they opened much better once the plant matured), and some browning edges. When it is good, it's wonderful. I came very close to digging it out a few years ago. Anita...See Moredoes anyone have info on this rose
Comments (14)I am not a great rose expert, so my input is minimal. Since there doesn't seem to be a rose called Empress of Russia, perhaps it could give you at least some starting points. The only rose originating in Russia with the word Empress in it is the Empress of the North, which is a hybrid rugosa and obviously not your rose. (There is the Empress Marie of Russia, but being a yellow tea it is unlikely to have come from Russia or to be your rose). The only pink rose with a Russian name that is widely in commerce and that I know of is Anna Pavlova. However, that doesn't seem to match your rose either (however, you can see pics of it on HMF and judge for yourself). There was a Russian hybridizer called Shushkov. The only rose they have pics of on HMF is Kolkhoznitsa. It doesn't seem to be a perfect match for your rose either. You can click on his name and see his list of plants, perhaps something will look familiar. Sorry not to be of more help. Masha...See MoreRose or not? Comments (56)Heere another favorite Flower Girl this one I got from Amity's Roses back when they were an all own root nursery. I've it for 12 years or more. In all that time she has never had a spot or mildew also apparently immune to anthracnose. She is normally a bit more upright I gave her too much nitrogen last year. Also spent to much time growing rather than flowering as much as normal. Won't do that again. Next to her is one of several gladiolus that I have had nearly as long. This is it's third time moved. Moved it right before our first wretched polar vortex winter and it lived. These are summer glads that should not be even close to hardy, I never dig them up to store them. They always come back even when the ground freezes below the bulb. Trust me here as it turns out glads have an amazing survival skill. I dug a clump a few years ago as it wasn't performing like it should. Well it was a giant stack of bulbs. When the bulb froze it would grow a new one on top so there was always the top couple still producing green leaves. Maybe glads always grow this way I don't know. All I need to do is take off the top bulb and replant about 8 inches deep and its starts the whole again. It was a stack of ten bulbs. One for each year it was planted. Sorry that was so long especially if you don't like glads....See MoreNippstress Nebraska z5
