OT - Praying Mantis and garden update

I have seen many Praying Mantis here over the last couple of weeks. Usually large gray-ish colored ones but recently found this green little one on our deck post. Do you find them in your gardens?

A chilly start to the morning here but I love it. My garden is still flourishing with perennial blooms and my slope wall project is still a work in progress. Walls are done, patio done,steps installed but still working on getting the entire slope mulched. Beds along the walls are ready for transplants along with bulb planting. I just got another load of mulch to hopefully complete what I need to get rid of the rest of the grass on the slope.

I ordered raised cedar garden boxes and will start putting them together and load with new top soil which also was just delivered for next years vegetable garden.

Not much downtime for us here. I'll post pics once I get a bit further along. Deer remain a nuisance here. Still spraying every couple of weeks.

That is it for me. Time to get outside and get to work.

We have a fair amount of them here, from tiny to HUGE and green, brown or grey! I remember years ago one of our kids picking up a huge one and getting bitten. He was not happy! Between them and the many hundreds of damsel flies in our yard lots of bad bugs get eaten here!

One cannot say that you don't stay busy Julia. All the work you did on your NY property and now all the work you are doing in WV is amazing!

All of my praying mantises are green. I've seen a few this year, but I used to have a lot more.

It sounds like you have been very busy. I look forward to seeing your garden areas next year. Sorry the deer are still around. Spraying every two weeks is a real pain. I haven't had to spray nearly that much. But I do need to spray new rebloom scapes on seedlings.

OMG, I love all of these responses! Rox - too funny about the hummingbird trying to get your hat hibiscus!!! They are VERY territorial, but understandably so - they have to eat about every 10-15 minutes during the day so a food source can be the difference between life and death, and very worth protecting. HAHA! Mike, that's exactly what I mean - I can be staring RIGHT AT THEM and then stick my face right in their face! I love seeing them out there on patrol, well, after I regain my composure anyway. I have started to like many of the insects more now that I know what they do, and have even declared a truce with the wasps on my plants now that I know they are good guys. Lynn, I bet as your garden develops you will have more encounters. The more hiding places, water and food sources the more will come - so I bet with more foliage you will see more. I have a hummingbird feeder so that's why they come but I can't do regular bird feeders due to the cats. K! OMG, I am so glad to see the kitty so happy and healthy! I didn't know you were keeping her, that's awesome :) That is truly a magical moment for you to have found her (and saved such a tiny one!) before it was too late. Love the name - one of my dogs is named Charlotte!

Interesting - We've had three hatchings from this same egg case since last Saturday. They stop hatching as it cools a bit. In the heat of the day, they hatch...and then stop and then start the next time it gets warm. Those that have survived the anxious frogs beneath the case, I scooped up yesterday after it hit about 70 degrees and the third hatching came out. They quickly scatter and begin foraging. I clipped a bunch of grass that is covered with aphids and placed it in with them. They are in heaven and so far, they are not feeding on each other, but on the aphids. There are plenty more where those came from. We will be turning them loose soon, it's just interesting to watch them. I'm not much interested in having a greenhouse filled with another 4 or 5 hatchings from these wonderful creatures and it has only partially hatched. I think my frog patch is nervous and they know what will happen if these tiny creatures become big lol. When I went out this morning, there were three frogs surrounding the egg case. I know what they're waiting for lol. BTW...we probably have 50 or more frogs in our GH and 4 or 5 times that outside the greenhouse. You can't walk from the front porch to the greenhouse without having to walk around the little hoppers. They serenade us all day and all night too. Well thank you everyone for all the info...it has been a learning experience and we enjoyed watching these little guys hatch.

Yes, Marlene. I remember each of us made a special ornament and sent to Sylvia when she had cancer surgery. (and thankfully she is healthy and doing great). I made a purple moon ornament ;o), and did the words "I see the Moon and the Moon sees me, God bless the Moon and God Bless Me" along the moon in small print. Sylvia loved her little tree and had it in her kitchen area I think after she got home. Neat you remembered that! And neat idea if we could come up something special for Lynne from us!! any ideas, anyone? I just can't believe all the complications she's had from the surgery and all these months in the hospital. She got such a short time back at home, then everything just went bad. Her husband is a rock, and a blessing to her. I know its has been so hard on him too. I keep sending prayers daily for both of them. hugs, Karen

Kimberly, Just checking in to see if you had any news. I was happy to see Dave and Trish comment on your thread. I have seen both of them in the other forum and they always seem to have such great advice. yeah for GW community!! I had to tell you that I shed a few tears over your post above, where you mentioned you homeschool, etc. I so understood what you mean when you said sometimes night seems so dark. And bless your heart when you said you thought maybe you weren't the person you had believed yourself to be. We all have those moments in life where we feel that way. It seems you are being tested and tried. I am sorry for the discouraging time you are having. BUT, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. I just believe that somehow, someway, good things will happen for you, a good person. I am keeping you in prayer, and will put you on our prayer requests at church this weekend. Keep looking up. I know your new home is not where you are laying up your treasures. You deserve to have space to raise and school your children. And you need not apologize for the space in the home or the amount of property. God gives good things. If He led you to it, He will lead you thru it. Have faith. Stay strong. Try every avenue. Continue to pray for wisdom as you seek a resolution. Have faith and trust that God will make a way. He still sits on His throne! Hugs to you. We're all rooting for you (and I'm praying for you. My praying mantis seemed to have gone on holiday for the last few years. That's why I was tickled pink when I found a mature one the other day. It's a whitish one, but I understand that it will probably grow darker as it gets older. They are my favorite bug and I was so surprised to find out that there are fan clubs and forums devoted to them. Some people keep them as pets. That's not going to be me btw...........Sometimes the journey to your goal is as much fun as the arrival. You seem to be enjoying all the prep work needed for you new garden. How many bulbs will you plant? It's the time now to order here and I've got a few coming myself, but no room for more then a few..........

Only saw one green mantis this season, I do usually see a few every season. Hope you get those pesky deer to stay away.

Spraying every two weeks is a pain? Some things I have to spray daily in the peak growing season. Fortunately, my daylilies on my home property are fence enclosed. Fall is a busy time. Lots of hard work, with no immediate gratification. True gardeners make use of the fall.

My matis are usually green, but I saw a mobster brown one this year.

I will be excited to see your photos of your project! I love to see the making of new gardens. Right now, due to no rain the past two weeks and record high temps (102 one day), my lawn is brown and dusty!!

I have lots of green mantis and caught this one in a flower causing me to wonder if he was waiting for a hummingbird--they will attack and devour if large enough.

For those that wish to see a neat video on many of the different types of Mantises out there, this may be an interesting 20 minutes or so. Amazing planet we have here with so much diversity of wildlife..............I've seen footage of a Mantis eating a Hummer btw. Well, part of the film. Too much for my tender heart to watch all of it. It wasn't a North American Mantis............Maryl

Interesting to see how some of you see the praying mantis in your garden. I've never seen a white one. .Thanks for the video link Maryl but not sure I want to see a hummer being eaten.

Another method I'm trying is laying down a tarp on the lower half of the slope to see if it will kill off the grass. Sort of a solarization method. Hope it works as I hate to use sprays. We had transplanted 2 Rose Of Sharon bushes to the upper slope on Friday. Sunday morning I noticed the deer got to them. These bushes should be deer resistant or at least that is what comes up on the internet. I made the mistake of not spraying them. Live and learn...spray everything.
