Guardian Angel...meh....
Comments (22)Well Hostanista, the masochist in me just ordered a GA to go with an existing order I was about to place. Please be sure to point and snicker at my 'meh GA' thread next year. Being that moccasinlanding has it with Golden Meadows and I happen to have a Golden Meadows well; I have no willpower and probably require some sort of Hosta OCD treatment. Comments (9)There are a lot of good books about residential architecture available, with both useful ideas and good photo illustrations. The challenge, of course, is that we are all different and each of us has our own individual preferences, likes and dislikes when it comes to residential architecture. Which is the way it should be. I, too, am not a strong fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, but a number of his principles for designing residences deserve serious consideration, especially these days when it is so expensive and challenging to think about an architect custom designed home. For example, Mr. Wright tended to believe in maximizing the possible space in the areas of communal use by the entire family--living room, et al--and minimizing the spaces in rooms used only briefly by individuals--bedrooms, kitchens, et al. These days, if the master bedroom suite isn't as large (or larger) than the living/family room the plan will not attract many interested folks. Same goes for the kitchen: an aircraft carrier-sized island and banks of custom, floor to floor cabinets is the dream to die for. Mr. Wright also believed in spatial contrast and drama to make interiors dramatic and inspiring. For example, entries might be narrow, rather dark and have a low ceiling leading to the living area which would suddenly explode with a very high ceiling and a large expanse of windows. He often would further the dramatic sense by causing a change in direction to further emphasize the spatial contrast: upon entering a home, one might have to transit through the entry space and then turn 90-degrees or 180-degrees before entering the major space! Contrast that experience with the all-too-common plan in so many builder's houses where one enters the home in a bowling alley like procession with a study on the right, dining on the left and at the end one sees the living/family area! No spatial progression, no change in experience, no anything! There is plan after plan like this posted here on Houzz. I could go on, but the point hopefully is obvious: there are many different approaches possible for the design of a custom home, and the goal should be to find those approaches which not only keep out the rain and support one's way of living, but also provide inspiration and delight for a lifetime!...See MoreNice, newer, but better? Comments (19)I think they did not change either of the openings on the current range wall to match because they wanted to leave the space on the other side of the wall original. I still don't know where the new refrigerator is. Before it was in the hallway behind the wall oven/DW. The wall on the "hall" side of the island still appears to be all storage of some sort. I would have liked to see the kitchen less white, and a bit more "organic" I guess. It doesn't really relate to anything else in the house, except at least they are both modernist. It's interesting to say "Otherwise I like what they did" because they didn't really do anything except refinish. That's what I like, too. I went to an open house of a house that had been previously restored in the 1960s and then updated in the 2000s after the estate was sold, and the Realtor asked what I thought. And I said "It's a nice renovation for the most part, I don't like the master bath at all, it's completely wrong for the house, and the kitchen is okay but a sort of overwrought" and mentioned one or two other small details, and the agent said ".....those are the things that were done in the recent renovation...the rest is from the previous restoration" with sort of a funny look on his face. Now if I really don't like something I try to get away without talking to the agent other than saying thank you. I have a really difficult time lying about stuff like that....See MoreInstagram - the good, bad & meh!
Comments (10)We fly to Buenos Aires overnight this evening and spend one night in a hotel. We board the ship on Thursday, but don't sail away until Friday evening. That leaves us almost three full days in BA. The cruise goes to Uruguay, Falkland Islands (depending on wind conditions), around the Cape, up the west side of South America including Chilean fjords, a couple of ports in Chile and Peru, on to Ecuador and Panama City. We go through the Panama Canal (our 8th time), then to Aruba, Curacao and Bonaire, ending up in Ft. Lauderdale after 34 days of cruising, where we rent a car and drive home. Dawn, if you have the time, consider what we have set up with Holland America beginning in late October. San Diego to several ports in Hawaii, then (not in order) Samoa, Fiji, Tonga, some other South Pacific islands I cannot pronounce, several ports in French Polynesia, then back to San Diego. 51 days, with lots of days at sea, when I will probably complete a book every other day. On the ms Amsterdam with about 1400 passengers, it is the ship that Holland America uses for their yearly world cruise....See Morebbstx
