How to level a floor?

We are trying to upgrade our old vinyl kitchen floor to LVT. Our nook window area slopes downhill from the house foundation to the windows. Some as much as 1/2". What is the best way to level this?

Better for you to determine if the structure in the bay is failing first. Sometimes the bay is suspended on the outside of the home and the structure fails for one reason or another. If that is the issue, then fixing that will eliminate the slope.

It does not need to be level, only flat and most often within an 1/8" over 10'. You say you have a bay and then show the bottom of a door, can you post a picture of the entire room? Probably if only the bay area is low, you would use a self leveling compound.

"Our structural engineer told us exactly what needed to be done. We didn't ask him to arrange to have it done." Same here. But he didn't feel the stairs were an issue. I don't mean to second guess the SE but at the very least I'm unwilling to live with a hall floor that feels like I'm going to topple over when I walk down it, as well as stairs that give you vertigo because they are so unlevel. He laid out very specific things we needed to do or have done to bring the house up to snuff, but sort of brushed aside issues that he felt were not safety-related as just part of living in an old house.

Probably a mud floor? "Mud" is a lean cement mixture, roughly 5:1 sand to cement. It'll be hard like "concrete", but it is much more friable, much easier to break out than true concrete. Along the perimeter of the floor, is that a waterproofing membrane that is turned up at the walls? Mud floors can be repaired. Clean well, get rid of any loose debris, use a bonding agent, and reshape the slope. Without getting down to a clean base, and without using a bonding agent, the repairs can sometimes separate from the old work. So it may be prudent to break the entire thing out and start over. That would allow you to incorporate a new drain as well. Depends on how far you want to take it and the skill set of the person doing the repairs.

I have to find my calipers to verify, but I believe that the vinyl sheet thickness is 1.5 to 2 mm thick. We already have the LVP stacked and ready to lay down and this was an unexpected hiccup. Fortunately, the only area that I’d need to bring up to the level of the vinyl sheet flooring is the dining room.

Your assessment that this enclosure was done badly is based on what? A slope in floor can be dealt w in a couple ways but this has been a functioning kitchen for how long? And you are seeking a remodel. So what is your attention drawn to ....to say the enclosure was done poorly. When was this enclosed and was it signed off ? There is probably a sweet spot to make some improvements but describe why the initial work was inferior. ... you are implying that but is that accurate? In general my instinct would be to reverse the dedicated space configuration. Bring kitchen into original house footprint and use the space in question differently....but I don’t see a picture. Kitchen Reno is time to get it all the way that’s best

The bay window area was always low. I don't think it's sinking/failing. There are no cracks or areas of sagging. I think the builder just didn't build it level.

It starts at the edge of the foundation and goes out to the windows/door so about 2 feet. Ignore the split vinyl. That's just a seam split not where it drops off. It starts dropping at the edge of the door frame. What kind of self leveling compound do you recommend?

We measured the entire kitchen floor with a laser level. See measurements differences in picture. There are slight bumps and dips but we have 2 main concerns. First, across its entire width the floor slopes down 1/2"-5/8" over about 8 feet starting from a relatively flat dining area. Toward the nook windows the slope is 3/8 to 1/2" over much shorter distances with the worst in the vicinity of the door.

Presented with the measurements a floor store representative said the difference can't be more than 3/16" over 10' (mfg specs) and told we'd need to get a contractor to level the floor before they can install.

We don't know what kind of contractor to find or how to find them. We are considering using floor leveling compound and doing it ourselves. Anyone have any advice?
