Floor suggestion with existing cabinets

My son just bought a house at auction. He is trying to keep the cabinets because they are in decent shape and prefers not to paint them. Countertops and appliances will be replaced. Looking for luxury vinyl plank in wood pattern that would tone down the yellow undertone of the cabinets and look good throughout the entire main living area.
Looking for design suggestions as well as an affordable product for a 22 year old with a big project.

Change out the lights to a 4000K LED bulb, that will reduce some of the overall yellow hue.

This is a big one. do this before picking any colors or bringing home samples. your current lights are making everything look very warm.

Look at Coretec Calypso Oak Pro XL. or something in that family.

You want an LVP that doesn't have a lot of grain movement, but is a warmer color. It could be dark or light, just no gray tones.

why not go w/engineered oak floors? These cabs have a similar hue (and blue gray is a great color that works with it) maybe Pale Oak for the walls, Simply White for the trim. medium stained oak floors, a nice runner. White quartz countertops, white tile splash.

Similar kitchen that another poster on here upgraded. natural red oak flooring is the best match for your cabinets. And, they hold their value more than LVP.

The cabs look like oak that have had a clear coat that has yellowed over time. If they were stripped and stained again, they wouldn't be as yellow.

What countertop is he getting?

Hardware? If he did a nice pull/handle in a matte black/gold or silver color, it would update it.

lose the granny valance and do a nice woven wood blind.

it's not difficult to remove the center panel on a few of the doors and add glass to it. It can be any type of glass. it just gives it a nice look.

Here are some oak kitchens that have been updated. look at everything done

silver handles and Leathered Gray Steel Granite. I'd do a larger size subway tile

when he is ready to paint, build some boxes on top so that you gain more storage and it looks better

Great ideas. The whole house is a gut. All flooring all walls need repairs and refinish so he wants to avoid the paint on the cabinets for now. Will definitely change the pulls. Looking at matte black. Stainless appliances. Color palette for adjoining room attached. We can plan to paint the cabinets but it will be a few years away.

Since you are keeping the floor tile, I would start with that first. Then choose the cabinet color you like that goes with the floor and from there you can find the right granite to go with both those. Keep in mind the floor tile may have looked peachy at the granite slab yard but in different light and around other elements it might be the more beige you thought prior. Do you have an image of the floor tile? Or the cab door? here is an image of the cab I tried to find. Here are some ideas of tile floors, cherry cabs and granite counters. Here is a photo with a floor with color and grain similar to your samples next to oak cabinets. It's too busy and the stain undertones clash. You need to start looking at a different part of the flooring store. Try samples with less prominent grain and not as much stain color variation. I hate to keep raining on your parade but light gray paint and white/gray stone will not look good with orange oak. You are mixing warm and cool colors. Even though gray and wood tones are both considered "neutral", they don't usually play nice together. Here is an oak with light spice stain. It is from Bruce.

IMHO the floor should also relate to your countertop color. Notice how your countertop color has pink in it? I personally love the floor style and color but agree with the other post about either using it wherever the old wood floor appears or go with linoleum or tile instead. I hate glue down or mastec on my floors if I can at all avoid it. Would that flooring work throughout your home?

IMO you ask who ever is doing the refinishing of the floors to see what they use and make sure they do samples for sure and then take those samples and move them around to see how they look in different spaces make sure your lighting is all LED 4000k too.

There are so many flooring stores that allow you to take the board home to see the floors in your home. You guys should do this, it helps so much!

I'd change the countertops. HD and Lowes have stock countertops that look really nice and are not expensive at all. I used them in my laundry room.

What's the lighting situation in the other rooms. Your color palette has darker colors.

Look at the right of the pic then the left. The 'yellow' is OBVIOUSLY coming from the lights and the paint. You seem to think it's less than ideal he's not filling a landfill with beautiful cabinetry just because you prefer the cheap painted out look. ugggg Paint and get new light bulbs. If the floor is at least two shades lighter or darker than the BEAUTIFUL cabinets (depending his preference) they will look great.

It sounds like your son has plenty on his plate, and lots of demands on his budget. What is the rest of the flooring? If it's serviceable and the kitchen flooring is not, he could replace the sheet vinyl. That will buy him time while he completes his other projects.

I like to do flooring last, so it doesn't get damaged by other work going on.

The kitchen looks functional. I would wait on any remodeling in that area. He may well find, after living with it for awhile, that he wants to change the layout - meaning any $$ he puts into it now will go down the drain. Instead, work on the main living area (reserving as much flooring as necessary down the road to finish the kitchen), and the bathrooms. Then the bedrooms, and lastly the kitchen. My guess is that he is going to find many unexpected expenses.....so not gutting it all right away will be a good idea.

IMO if the whole house is a gut do it right and that kitchen is where he starts it is dated and what he really needs is a good interior designer who has good kitchen design experience . A 22 yr old can live without a fancy kitchen until it is done right . The tile foor needs to be ripped out before he can do new flooring so might as well get at the kitchen when that is happening.I for sure would not spend one dime on new counters and appliances right now. A complete gut job needs a very well thought out plan and IMO that requires more help than can be gotten here . I know designers are expensive but so are mistakes made in a hurry. The bones of the house are the first steps not the pretty stuff.

Perhaps look online at affordable products for your son. We recommend replacing all appliances with stainless steel, updating flooring and countertops, along with backsplash, lighting and hardware. Here are a few kitchens we have done which might just give you some more ideas.

Wow tracefloyd the mom is trying to help him thats why. And if they want to do work let them. People come on here to ask for advice not to be told not to do it. We helped

my daughwr and aon in law with house financially and gave opinions. the house turned out great for them. It looks like a great starter home. Good luck and enjoy the process.
