How to decorate bathrooms with slate (look-alike) floors?
Comments (13)I did Dal Continental slate floor in the bathroom, with white tiles and a different color slate trim and pencil. I love it. I really like contrasting materials and textures, and the smooth white tiles and the more rustic feel of slate is very appealing for me! Am doing a backsplash as I write in the kitchen which will be white subway and slate border to contrast, too. We live in a more wooded area, so the contrast fits the outdoors as well. I don't have a lot of views of the floor, but here is one you may be able to get the basic look of: Here is a link that might be useful: other pics of bathroom......See MoreAnyone out there with REX Ceramiche Slate Solutions tile floors?

Comments (26)I want to thank everyone for their beautiful pictures. I picked up my tile and now I have to choose the grout. In my lighting the tiles are a little more gray than at my neighbor's with their lighting but I know once I pick out a grout, they will look nice after seeing all your beautiful kitchens. Willtv, I love your dramatic large gorgeous dark tiles that are perfect for your black and white kitchen and the grout color is a very good choice. Cherigw, your Spanish tile is looks nice with the diagonal smaller tile in the middle of four tiles every so often. Honeychurch, I love your tiles with their beautiful coloring and the neutral gray grout colors goes so nice with your tiles. Shar-az, I love your tiles and thanks for letting me know they are 20" X 20" with a 1/8th grout line that is perfect for those tiles. I love the color of your grout also. Katsmah,I love your tiles and the pattern you chose so much with that perfect color Beach grout. That is the pattern that I wanted to do on my floor initially until I saw these discontinued tiles and decided they were nice and I would use them and live without the pattern since my kitchen is so small. KayceeFL, Your tiles look great with your stainless steel appliances and the color grout goes nicely. Daicey, I really love the layout of your tiles and the coloring with such a perfect match with the grout. It is making me feel happier since my tiles ended up being a little more gray than I wanted due to the lighting in my kitchen but seeing your tiles, I see that gray can be beautiful. I have not yet chosen the grout for my tiles or decided if they will stay lined up square or with a different pattern so if anyone has any other pictures to share, that will be welcomed. Thank you again. I am glad I went with the rectified tile this time, since I am not great at cleaning so for me the thinner grout line will be better. The installer I was going to use, I may hire him to do other projects in my home since he does a great job installing closets. His reply in email today for the store to help me out with the grout and thinset since he hasn't done too many tile jobs has me wanting to interview some installers and see what they think between a 1/16th or a 1/18th grout line. The tiles I have in my foyer have the fancier edge so I have a 3/16th grout line there but for my kitchen, I want slimmer since I feel rectified tiles in the 18 X 18 size will look nice in a skinny grout line. Thank you again! More pictures are always welcome....See MoreSlate or slate look-a-like on kitchen floor
Comments (28)Hi, I just found this thread, I don't know if you've made a decision yet but thought I'd offer my two cents. While building our home my husband and I debated heavily over real slate, he wanted it for the "look" of natural stone and I didn't want it because of the maintenance, and the problems (flaking, staining, and the variations in thickness of the tile, etc...). After a lot of serious consideration we chose to go with the real slate because it fit the style of the house. I have not regretted it. It looks great and after having moved in a year ago has been holding up well. We went with Brazilian multi color slate that I found through a local tile distributor. It was professionally installed and my tile guy used an impregnator to seal it. I believe the impregnator is available at home depot. While shopping for the slate I found a huge price difference between two local distributors for what was essentially the same thing, one offered ungauged and unsealed 16"x16" tiles for around $5.50/sf and the other offered the same size tiles but gauged and sealed for more than double the price. I opted for the ungauged and unsealed knowing my tile guy would apply sealer anyway. The tile turned out to be extremely consistent in thickness, very durable, and was easy to install. We've had no flaking as of yet. I have since learned that Brazilian multi-color slate is a favorite of architects because it is much more even and less prone to breakage than many other types. As far as cleaning, it hides the dirt very well. I've found sweeping with a soft broom the best way to keep it clean. If you are quick to clean up spills with hot water and a little dishwashing liquid it will hold up against staining however it is porous and will tend to absorb spills that are left on it. That is all part of the look and also gives it character with age. It is installed over radiant heat which is quite comfortable. We have about 500 square feet of it on our first floor, I don't find it hard on the feet at all, and I rarely wear shoes in the house. I don't know how to upload pictures to this forum but if you'd like to email me I'd be more than happy to send you some photos of it. Good luck with your decision!...See MoreDragonfly Tile & Stone Works, Inc.
