Tall garden phlox?

I have a lot of tall garden phlox but this one is my favorite. However I have lost its identity. It is different from my other tall garden phlox, the flower heads are looser and the flowers are smaller. It also seems to spread by rhizome a bit. I have a pretty large clump of it. The pollinators love it also. Any idea what type it is? Thank you!

General aspect including flower head shape is like Phlox paniculata. The only other one to check would be P. maculata.

That's it!...and in checking my Indiana Wildflower book, I see it is a native here and ranges in color from red purple to white. Would this one maybe be referred to then as 'species' Phlox paniculata? I know there are many named varieties of it. Sue

Can someone tell me what Spider mite damage looks like on Tall Garden phlox plants? I have some Phlox that are really old and many new varieites and new plants. I really do not have trouble with powder mildew, but my leaves seem to scorch on some of my Tall phlox. I was wondering if that was from Spider mites or it is just to hot in the afternoon sun for these Phlox? The leaves seem to yellow dry out and fall off? Any help would be appreciated! Chaucer

If you cut the heads off of tall Phlox paniculata, often they will send out side shoots to bloom some more. If you cut them down, you will loose out on any of that extra blooming but it probably would not hurt the plants if you want to clean up the garden. It seems a bit early to me, however, to be doing this but whatever. I have never heard of burying the seedheads to get more phlox, as the seeds may not be ripe yet, and then I think they would just rot in the ground. If you cut them off the seeds will not ripen either. Even if they do come up, you are not guaranteed what color you will get as they don't come true from seed. If you want the same color, you should dig and divide your plants and replant where you want them. If you move the small plants now and relocate them, they will probably survive, and grow and may bloom next year if they are old enough to bloom.

Varmints! I had voles take out one clump of my purple phlox last week. Dig down carefully and see if the roots are intact. It might be a disease, but most likely some kind of rodent. They have a decided sweet tooth. Phlox and roses are sweet through and through and voles love their roots. They will also eat tulip bulbs. I plant daffodils around my tulips for protection. Daffs are poisonous, so the voles leave them alone. Little buggers! Whatever is causing it, I sure hope you discover it soon. Solution for your phlox? Bury roofing paper down in the ground around their roots or a bottomless black plastic pot. Use one big enough to accommodate their root ball size so you don't cramp their growth. The rodents will dig through the earth and run smack dab into that and go around it. That is the only thing that has ever helped me save mine. ~Annie

Looks like Jeana but possibly Robert Poore. Jeana is a favorite of Swallowtails. Check out Mt Cubas website, they had Jeana and Robert Poore in there trial. I have Jeana and it gets about 5 ft tall but from what there website site says so does Robert poore.

Garden phlox, Phlox paniculata, is well known for self seeding and named cultivars are unlikely to produce offspring that are true to form. The photo looks very much like the species, which is native to a large swath of the country and as also naturalized further afield. I'd be reluctant to assign any cultivar name to this plant.

Gardengal you may be right but they mention that they lost the identity of it which sounds like they are talking about the tag which sounds as of they bought it from nursery. All the garden centers at least in my area only carry cultivas. I have 4 Jeana and it looks just like that. I posted several pics of mine in another thread if it helps for comparison.

I believe this is Phlox paniculata Jeana. The smaller flowers and the increased number of flowers in the inflorescence screams Jeana. It comes from a Wild population in Tennessee, and it Will come true from seed.

I've been talking to a few people about Phlox paniculata jeana and it is basically sterile, so my comment about it growing true from seed isn't so truthful. I think the coming true from seed info came from a wrightup from Izel Plants. The story is that Jeana discovered 'Jeana' in her back yard that goes up to the river. She only found 1 plant. The 1 plant story makes sense because if it had been a whole colony, it would have been considered for a taxonomic placement as a subspecies or variety. It's still a variety, just not taxonomical.
