Tub fixtures - placement of filler and hand-held shower
Comments (10)Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. While bonnieg011 's arrangement would technically work for me, it would be more effort to install. I'd have to drill through another corner of the support structure, and get four long hoses to connect the faucet to the levers 5 feet away. Plus, while it does sound nice to be able to top up the hot water without getting it in the face, or having to re-arrange yourself to reach the controls, it also seems like it'd be a pain to fill the tub in the first place, since you'd have to adjust the knobs, then run over to the other end of the tub, check the temp, then run back. I know it wouldn't be that bad, but I also just prefer the look of all the chrome things clustered together. -Joel...See Morekohler ceiling mount tub filler
Comments (24)Toad - there was a thread about this but the person was simply speculating. I believe the person was also overthinking a non exsistant problem. Sure, a water stream cools off more falling from 8' than it does from 2' in a normal tub. Without precise measurements and complex calculations there's no good way to put a definitive # on the actual loss. One would also have to account for the extra cooling that a regular tub filler introduces simply by "adding" air to the water stream at the start to get a fair comparison. The Kohler water stream will also get cooler on the outer portion falling from 8' but it will also act as an insulator for the innermost water of the column. All of this pretty much makes the arguement moot because the water is still going to be hot enough when it reaches the tub in both cases. You are simply going to set or adjust the water temp. to suit your prefs. for bathing based on what you feel coming out of the orifice whether it's a shower head, bodyspray, reg. tub filler. or a laminar fill spout. The ceiling mount makes it no harder to fill a tub to warm it up during a bath than a regular one, empty some water out , turn on more hot water, turn off....See MoreDo you think I'll miss having a tub filler?
Comments (7)Sure - I'm going to fill the tub with the same amount of water (which, for the tubs we're looking at, is in the 70-80 gallon range). But, it will take almost twice as long - and yes, the water does cool. Sassinak - you're on my page! (I'm looking for a tub that holds less water, btw - but still, taking 15 minutes to fill a tub vs. 8 or so does seem like an issue). We didn't want a wall spout because it's a two person tub - and we don't want a faucet poking into the head of Bather #2. We did go to a good plumbing store yesterday - and it looks like we'll get the handheld PLUS a tub filler - with just a diverter between the two (no handles for the filler) - and mount the filler on the deck, possibly back side middle - so no having to have it in one's face. I really appreciate the help. Lazypup, in particular - thanks for the clarification on flow rates. We brought home Grohe literature that indicates that one of their tub fillers will reach a rate of 15 gpm! (We have good pressure at the main point of entry to our house and will be replumbing from that point to the bathroom in order to keep that good pressure up where it belongs - so I'll be able to ZOOM fill my tub). Not that it's been much of an issue - I actually have my day planned out right now so that I can fill our current fairly small tub (takes about 15 minutes) while I do stuff in the kitchen. It would be nice, though, to be able to plan a quicker bath!...See MoreHelp with Roman Tub Filler
Comments (2)I saw one in a magazine that filled from the center of the ceiling, so if it's the proper spout for the application it's obviously available. Mine isn't installed, but it's a waterfall. It comes out of the wall to just over the edge of the tub and the base of the faucet (where water flows) is just a few inches up. Any further away from the rim and your drips will dribble on the ledge, which isn't really desirable. For the waterfall, I was told that if it's too high we'll not get enough arch to flow comfortably into the tub, and too low is unsightly (which ruins the waterfall effect). My plumber suggested that we use a garden hose to the back of the spout and see how it flowed. We used this when we figured out where to place it....See MorePatricia Colwell Consulting
