Fireplaces Design Dilemma Remodeling

Best fireplace size for living room

Should I get a 36" or 46" linear fireplace? I plan on putting my 55" TV above. I could also go with the standard 36" wide by 36" fireplace. Attached are photos of the model home (36"). They put tile and a mantel, I don't think I'm going to be putting any tile or mantel.

Do you need a FP? IMO TVs never belong above a FP and if you have a big TV then you need a large linear firebox IMO in that space you show I would get rid of the FP it is in a really odd spot for enjoyment of TV watching for sure If you must have FP put it onthe right hand wall

Yeah I don't like the fireplace placement at all. We can't move the fireplace to the right hand wall unfortunately. Do you think the more traditional fireplace would be better as we can install touching the ground? For the linear fireplace, we can have it installed either 6" or 10" off the ground.

I really like Flo's layout for your room. It was the same as I was thinking. It makes sense to take advantage of as much of the floor space as you have available. In a narrow room, having the TV over the fireplace makes it difficult for viewing. Better to take advantage of the empty wall space you have to put it at a comfortable height. She posted some great options above for furniture and accessories as well.

I've had both vented and ventless from Petersen Real Fyre and they both looked very good. Be careful about measurements and make sure you get the largest that will fit, so they fill the fireplace. Is your fireplace designed for direct vent, with a separate intake for combustion air? If you don't install glass doors it will be easier to make them look realistic, but will also be much less efficient. The gas logs installer is supposed to block the flue open (for safety), so you are not supposed to be able to open and close it after they are installed. Bruce

I like the option where there are two focal points--the fireplace and TV on adjacent walls, as you have now. TVs over fireplaces are a last resort if you don't have another wall for it. So option 3 or 4 would be my choice, depending on whether you feel the need for a sectional. I personally like a sofa with chairs, but that's just my opinion, you may have a different one. Then get a cocktail table (round or square if you go with a sectional, and rectangular if a sofa and two chairs). I'd also place a console table behind the sofa, especially where you walk in from the foyer. I'd get a long low console table for the TV to add weight to that wall, and to house books, accessories, etc. You'll also need end tables so each seating area has a place to put down a book or a drink. Finally once you get your layout set, make sure you have enough lighting.

The mantel in the model home looks a bit tall for the room so I have shortened it.

The height of the TV for good viewing needs to be brought down also.

Here is one option.

If your wall is wide enough you might be able to use a linear fireplace like the one you see below.

You might consider placing the TV on another open wall if possible. If that isn't the case, then we might suggest lowering the height of the fireplace so that you will be able to enjoy watching the TV at a height that wouldn't hurt your neck.
