OT - RAIN! Yesterday an early storm eruupted...

HA! It started raining (50 ish degrees F, after last week when it was 105) yesterday morning and kept it up until about 11PM without stopping. We had not had any rain since Feb, so I was ecstatic. I went out to get the paper this morning, and there is not a cloud in the sky, although the entire garden is still dripping, and they claim it will rain more today. So, so, happy - the garden is happy too, the birds are singing, and it smells lovely.

We got rain too, first time since late May. Maybe just about 1/2” , but rain changes the entire atmosphere, you can feel the relief in the air! We are having a light sprinkling this morning, hope you get more, too!

Chris, The older onions likely still would be fine. You know, you always could plant the older ones close together to use as green onions/scallions and use the fresher ones you just purchased for your bulbing crop. Yesterday I was looking at (a) the mostly empty vegetable garden which only has some reseeding flowers and herbs sprouting in it along with a few leftover fall greens and (b) the greenhouse full of flats of young plants, and I told my husband "but I do have my spring garden planted....it is just that all of it is planted in flats in the greenhouse". That was a slightl exaggeration, but not much of one. My onion plants from Dixondale arrived two weeks ago today and I thought I'd have them in the ground already, but recurring rounds of rain and the threat of snow have prevented that. I'm going to plant them on Wednesday unless something drastic happens to prevent me from planting them that day and I don't care if I am standing ankle deep in mud in the pathways to plant them in the raised beds----I'm gonna git it done. We are so far south that the snow will totally or almost totally miss us. We haven't had much snow in the forecast all along, and if we get any at all now, it is supposed to be less than an inch. All we really have down here south of Marietta is lots of gray, gloomy skies, wind and the tiniest amount of light rain. Last year I was so much farther along than I am now, garden-wise, but last year we had winter in December and part of January and then it was more or less over. This year is backward. We had little cold spells in December and January, but then February turned quite a bit colder and snowier, and now I wonder if March will continue the trend. I kinda think it will. I'm afraid we'll all be planting around recurring rain and snow storms in March and just hoping that there is not another big snowstorm. This is not feeling like a year where we plant as early as we like and feel good about it....it is feeling like a year when we'll be out protecting the plantings from late cold weather. Larrry, Isn't it always that way? There's something about a sunny, mild winter day that makes gardeners just lose their minds. And speaking of losing its mind....the Methley plum tree has been right on the verge of blooming for 2 weeks but ever since the weather turned back colder after those days we had with highs in the 70s, the blooms had stalled and not progressed, and I was relieved. I was hoping maybe the stall would last until the end of February at least. Nope. This morning, with cold wet weather and a chance of snow in the forecast, the whole dang tree burst out into bloom. Once a plum tree decides that it is time to bloom, you surely cannot stop it. If we get any snow here at all, it won't be the first time I've had a plum tree sitting out there with snow piled on top of its blooms, but the bad part of it is that the bees which could be out flying around pollinating those flowers are nowhere to be found today. Who can blame them? I wouldn't be out there flying around in a cold, windy rainstorm. Dawn

What is your take on the track and snow amounts on the storm tomorrow? Every forecaster is different. I've seen or heard everything from 1-3 inches for us to 9-13 inches. One forecaster said the two main computer models are almost 200 miles off on the predicted track. Sorry, we were doing kid stuff yesterday afternoon & I was off-line. I was surprised to hear the 1-3" forecasts yesterday, as the low hit the coast way down over SoCal and no evidence of a northerly track, and you see it today over SoNM and making TX unhappy. The old guys who taught me were always skeptical of model runs and relied on patterns and their memories - our forecast meetings always had a question for the experienced forecasters: 'what was your first guess' and much more often than not the first 'guess' was the one that verified. That said, the next bad boy out there off the coast has somewhat less energy as the one last week, not quite as deep or moist but could have winds that rival last weeks' if it doesn't fill while over water. Folks with animals need to start watching the forecasts closely as they'll start to be vulnerable if these next ~two weeks' worth of storms start to swing up north of Albuquerque and take the spring storm tracks, which should come earlier this year. The Aleutian low looks like it wants to set up too far offshore, and that means the surface lows that come ashore come south and swing up thru NM. So far they've been way south, but as time goes on they move N. If you are running short of hay and were going to go in a couple weeks, you may want to think about going sooner rather than later if you have room. That's how it looks like it is shaping up today. Dido you will be familiar with the English saying "All ladies are women but not all women are ladies." Paula/Rosefolly I am getting to the age when I am more than happy to be referred to as a 'girl' but not when used by a jovial male in the context "Perhaps the girls would like to make the coffee/wash up/ prepare a couple of dozen sandwiches, while we men (never boys) discuss this weighty problem. Did any of you see the Big Match last night? That ref really needs to get his eyes tested . . . " Sorry Dido, Sport rears its ugly head and it is the spitting of footballers I really cannot stand, especially in close-up on TV. I'm very non-sporty partly because I was a wheezy child at a time when asthmatics were wrapped in cotton-wool and not encouraged to 'take part'. The older generation of my family were big players/kickers/hitters/throwers/goal-scorers and my brothers and I were always being reminded how feeble we were in comparison. Even my Grandfather, who, by the time I was a child spent his days sitting in his armchair had played rugby against the famous All Blacks in 190?. An impossible act to follow!

We lucked out north of Santa Barbara, only four inches with another .7" forecast by Tuesday. Santa Maria was wisely designed with many spreading grounds to catch the storm run off. Yesterday, all the sports fields and parks around us were full, allowing the water to soak back into the aquifer which supplies a large part of our drinking water. Today was supposed to be partly sunny, except it continues to be very blustery with scattered showers. My rain gauge shows nearly half an inch today. There is actually, finally water flowing in the river.

They were "over hyping" this rain system on the TV for days - almost hysterical announcers telling people there would be flooding, deaths, etc. (where do they get these people?). Anyway, over hyping usually means that practically nothing will happen. So, our irrigation was set to go on the night before, so I left it on on the premise that that would make it rain. It worked!

When they say storm of the century it is ususlly a dud.

Yes - the announcers acted as if one normal sort of storm would be life threatening - sigh.

We were supposed to receive about .33" but the system stalled and the weather reported this area has picked up nearly 2" with the possibility of another half inch before it moves on! Thankfully this city was built with catch basins to collect the rain runoff to help recharge the aquifer.

Good luck to you all, folks, and, Jackie, congratulations!

We had a good rain a couple of days ago, perhaps 2cm in our area, instantly absorbed by the dry ground. I hope it rained more higher up in the mountains--a friend who lives in that direction reported storms in the afternoon before it began raining here--and fed the reservoir, which is just about dry. The rain we've gotten in the past two months, though not enough evidently to recharge the aquifers, has kept the plants watered, so that the ones that survived the summer are now doing reasonably well. Some are thriving: I was checking out the old part of the big garden, and discovered that the Buddleia alternifolia that has sat still for a good decade, finally has launched into growth, while its neighboring shrubs were also hearty. I'm full of plans for the garden, stymied and stifled by two realities: one, the still-dry ground, the other, the limitations of my own strength and energy. Still, it's good to dream. I hope that bart bart also got rain.

Forecast is for more rain this coming weekend. I hope so, and for the likewise predicted falling temperatures. It's still quite warm during the day, and miserably buggy.

I hope all of you, especially the people who got no rain so far, get some. We had 0 yesterday, but last night it rained again, (woke me up it was so loud - a lovely reason to wake up at 3AM!) and the newspaper wrapping still had water droplets all over it when I just picked it up. 😁

I was feeling passed-over until Livermore got its own personal drenching yesterday. We only had a third of an inch until around 4 p.m. when, in just 10-15 minutes, we got another third of an inch, for a total of 0.67 for the storm. There was a red dot centered over Livermore on the doppler radar that came out of nowhere (thunderstorm activity) and no other rainfall for miles around. Haven't seen such intense rainfall since living back in New York and Massachusetts, where rain like that was, at times, common, practically every day, during the summer.
