Will hydrangea become stunted if in a pot for too long

jemacaslan
last year

I have some Endless Summer hydrangea that I haven’t been able to get in the ground for a few years, so they’ve been in pots. Probably 4-5 gallons of soil; the pots are 14” across and 12” deep, but only 50-70% full. I’m wondering if such an environment can permanently stunt them, kind of like a bonsai. If I plant them in the ground, will they still grow to their full size?
