Master bath shower reno help!

I’m doing a master bath reno. The current shower and tub occupy 10 feet of wall space. I was going to remove the tub and have a 10 foot walk in two person shower, but that seems way too big. I’m not that into baths that I need to make one fit, but could put a freestanding tub in if it makes sense. Also interested in a shower of a more reasonable length (6’?) and doing something else with the extra space.

I am also planning to remove the archways.

Please help me come up with an idea!

Our contractor is scheduled to start demo in 3 days, so i need my new plan fast!

You're have demo with a plan in place?

Post a floor plan with the dimensions, openings etc.

The area that we are designing is 10 feet long and 4 feet wide. We are demoing everything and starting from scratch to build what we want.

See the pictures -- we will be building in the space currently occupied by the bathtub and the shower with the arch in the middle.

We are planning to demo the arches so that section is open from the floor to the ceiling (with the exception of the glass panes / doors we install for the shower). That is optional and we don't have to demo them. Another possibility is just demoing the middle column and leaving the columns near the top of the ceiling.

We are re-doing everything else in the bathroom, so we can start w/ a blank slate. We will install new cabinetry / sinks and floor tiling. The vanity will be a little shorter so there will be more space between the vanity and new shower space (where the current tub is located).

If you could find a way to make the waste line work, I like the first layout I did for you. It feels very open & spacious. It gives you lots of linen storage, a larger toilet room & a makeup area. It just seems to layout better with each area of the room having a particular function. The second layout is similar to one I had pulled as an inspiration pic for our bath. I like that there is still a toilet room & the tub is able to be a little longer. Hopefully with the toilet backing up to the other bathroom's toilet the waste line shouldn't be such an issue. If the cost or feasibility of doing the first layout is prohibitive, I would do the second one. I think either one is definitely better than the smaller layout you are currently living with--so either would be an improvement & feel luxurious while adding greater function to the space. I'm a huge fan of "toilet rooms" as you can still use the bathroom space even if your spouse is indisposed at that moment. Additionally, looking down the road at potential resale, I think with a bathroom that big potential buyers would think it odd if the toilet was sitting right there out in the open--it may be a deal-breaker (the same could be said of having just 1 vanity/sink). Just my $0.02. And just to confuse the matter even further... Toilet is not in it's own room, but there is some privacy at least from the door, shower & tub. Not so much from the vanity area, though. I would rank this one my third choice. Hope this helps!

Thanks all! Like most bathroom remodels, we were confined to a certain space. Ideally we would have liked a soaker tub too, but there was no way to fit it in. The hers vanity (nearest the closet door) used to be a shallow 6 ft long closet, of which you could only access about 3 ft of it in the door opening. So that wall was knocked out and the hers vanity was put in. I am very happy with the new footprint. I wish I had a before photo to show the changes!

You should have enough space to have a tub and a shower, depending on the size of vanities, placement of doors, whether you need a toilet enclosure and where the existing plumbing is located. It may be tight, esp. if you want a decent sized shower. Moving the toilet is a PITA. The more plumbing you keep in its original spot, the cheaper it will be. For a quick and dirty (and free) mock up you can use the arrange-a-room tool at BHG. First you specify your room size (unfortunately, their minimum room size is 8 feet by 8 feet, so you'll have to specify a room size of 11 by 8 and ignore one foot of it). Then you pick from among a variety of plumbing fixtures (look in furniture and select bathroom. You'll find toilets, sinks, vanities, corner and regular showers and tubs, etc.). You can also add windows and doors (look in architectural items) You can rotate all of the fixtures, specify sizes, etc. by clicking on info once you drag the fixtures into the room. The program allows you to save, retrieve and print out up to 25 designs. Nothing too sophisticated, but it's easy and it does the trick. Here is a link that might be useful: arrange a room

Meghan, Suggest you address the order of business first (don't put the cart before the horse by demoing without a plan). Hire a qualified kitchen/bath designer to discuss the options and have a written design. Do you actually have contractors lined up to do the work without knowing what they will be doing? It's just a little confusing to be starting the demo without the plan.

We've never heard of a kitchen / bath designer. Where do we find one?

We've developed our ideas w/ input from our our realtors, friends who've done remodels, contractors during walk-throughs and reps at plumbing stores which specialize in baths.

The contractor is hired and scheduled to start demo this Weds (we could delay if needed). The demo work won't be impacted by our design based on our current thinking. We'll remove everything on the floor and walls in the shower area that we're redesigning regardless of our final decision. There's a middle column in the picture that we plan to remove regardless.

The question is what we'll put back in its place

Plumbing is scheduled to start the following week (Sept 26th). We'll need to know our plans by then.

You need a 2D plan with all dimensions. And contractors and real estate agents are NOT designers. You need a professional. A kitchen and bath designer. Post your 2D floor plan

I'm drawing up a 2D plan right now. Since demo starts on our project in 2 days (we're doing more reno than just the master bath), I'm hoping to get some feedback quickly on our ideas. If there's a designer who has time and can give some quick input here or via another platform, please message!

Here’s our idea for the new design. We’ll remove the previous linen cabinet and put in a new one asking the vanity wall. Move shower footprint to west tub was and leave the rest as open space for an armoire or sitting area.
